Question about Pitfall!

I've noticed in some gameplay videos of Pitfall! that the tendency is to go right instead of left. I always thought left was the recommended method of playing this game (wasn't that in the manual in the tips section?). That's how I usually do it. Never got too far in this game (I'm not a great gamer, to be honest) but should I go right?

If you die, you respawn on the left side. The logs all go right to left.

 

Going left is an easier game, but I imagine you can get all treasures in either direction - with careful planning.

Most enemies that move (logs, scorpions, etc) spawn on the right side of the screen, so going left will almost guarantee you get hit. I always went right, but that was me.

Weren't you supposed to go right and use the underground areas in some parts to beat it with in a certain time? Like going under ground shaved time off.

I'm trying to remember watching something with the guy that made Pitfall! and he something about it - could be wrong tho.

This is the walk through map I used to beat it several years back, go right until you get to the underground area then go left Ricky Bobby.

Thanks for all the replies, this is helpful. The link to the map is great (was that published by Activision back in the 1980s?). I'll have to redouble my efforts on the game, especially once I get the Flashback Activision edition.
