When the PPro was on the drawing board, its designers had consulted with Microsoft. MS had said not to bother with any 16-bit optimizations, it's going away. Intel is like that's great and all. They used the die space for something else. When the PPro was ready to ship, Microsoft was like, oops! We couldn't entirely eliminate 16-bit code just yet. True story: I was looking at buying a Pentium Pro PC from someone and he showed off a DOS based game running on it. It ran ok, about the same a plain ol' Pentium but wasn't worth the extra money for it when Windows 95 games still had yet to fully come out. By the time they did I got a P-II anyway...
