Disk Loading Problems

Recommended Posts

After not using my 1200XL in a while I decided to try and hook it up to my SIO2PC device tonight. Using RespeQT I queued up a disk image, turned the 1200XL on and... nothing happened. I just get the BASIC prompt (I'm using APE Warp OS from my 32 in 1 OS mod). Thinking that maybe I had the wrong COM port I tried the other and still nothing. Not to be denied, I hook up my 1050 and... nothing! The drive doesn't even try to access, it's like the 1200XL doesn't even know it's there. Now I'm beginning to wonder if something is wrong with the SIO port itself (cracked solder joint maybe?) so I plugged in my 410 tape deck. I don't have a tape to test it with anymore, but CLOAD started the drive spinning, so I assume that means some sort of communication is going on with the SIO port.

Any idea what could be wrong? Everything was working the last time I tried it a few months ago. Any tests I can run? The only other SIO device I have on me is an 850 interface, but I don't think that's going to be of much help. I know for a fact that the 1050 works, so that can't be it either.

UPDATE: The 1050 is working, but I can't get the SIO2PC working

You can test with an 850 at least with Stock Atari OS (make sure an XL or XE OS is selected in the 32-in-1) with no disk drive attached and basic either on or off, it will self-load the R: handler on bootup. You should hear 3 short then a longer I/O loading tone for a second or two before the READY prompt or Self Test appear.

other ideas...

Do you have a different SIO cable to try?

You can also test with a 410 and no pre-recorded software, just type in a simple BASIC program of your own and save it to tape, ie:

10 ? "Hello World!"
20 GOTO 10

Then type CSAVE, listen for the obnoxious beep, press record+play on the 410, and Return.

When complete, reboot or type NEW, rewind the tape, type CLOAD, press play, hit return. When completed with no errors, type LIST and see if it came back.

Another thought, are you able to test the 1050 on another computer?

It's possible you need the R63 delete done to your

1200XL at this point in time. I refer you to the

picture in this post and note the very tip of the

wooden skewer is pointing to a fixed 1200XL.

You can jumper around the resistor for a temporary

test with two alligator clips and a bit of jumper

wire, but the real fix is to just jumper the resistor

or replace it entirely with a wire jumper. It properly

connects the SIO READY line with +5 volt buss directly

as it should be instead going thru 100 ohm R63 which is

known to cause silent 1050s on the SIO daisy chain. It is

a direct connection in all other XL/XE except the 1200XL.

Checking schematics won't help as they are all wrong,

most indicate the READY line is fed thru L10 but actual

tracking of circuits will show that L10 feeds the MMU

and while in the vicinity of the READY line has nothing

to do with it.

I had the same issues... this solved it for me...... it was a change in respeqt that made it like the sio had died... it didn't.. as for +5, added a diode and fuse to mine...years ago... just to be safe...

Ah yes of course, I've read that before about 1050's without the +5v on 1200XL. Interesting though that it used to work. Maybe the power supply or resistor are behaving slightly different than in the past, with slightly different voltage level and current tolerance... And does the serial sio2pc utilize the +5v as well?

I'll try some of these suggestions tonight and see what I find. I'm 99.9% sure the 1050 and SIO2PC are just fine, but I can try them on my 800 and make sure.

The weird thing is that everything was working just fine a few weeks ago. All I've done since then is just move the system to another part of the room, that's it. That's why I was wondering if I somehow damaged my SIO port by unplugging and plugging the disk drive back in. I've literally done nothing else to the system.

My 1200XL is heavily modified so it has the 5V mod I'm sure. Like I said, the 1050 worked just fine last time I tried it, as did the SIO2PC (that's how I program my The!Cart).

I'm using the latest version of RespeQT as I downloaded it last night. I assume it has this fix in it? What handshaking should I use? I guess I can try v3 and see what happens.

The reason respeqt started acting like nothing was there is because they changed it for arduino's and that was throwing the sio2pc into 10502pc mode...after some fiddling about the cause was found it was fixed, as bonus they also fixed ring indicate as it follows the falling edge as opposed to rising edge of serial signalling

Please try using the one in the link as they might not have pushed it yet, which sio2pc cable are you using?

Using an Atarimax sio2pc rs232 I selected dsr,

and only use the edge check mark to as described in the thread with RI and non standard devices.

Using a weirdly wired sio2pc ftdi cable I had to use RI w/ edge checked

I'm using a super old SIO2PC cable someone made for me 10+ years ago.

Funny you should mention that.. I have 800's that they purposely removed pins from... and a had a jaguar as an xl with bent pins I bout them cheap... was told they were broken... straightened the pin on the Jaguars controller cord and the pin in the XL .. both worked no problem whatsoever... gave the XL back to them (just felt too guilty) and everyone was happy!

oh my you tried a 1050 with no response to the Atari itself ?? nothing...?

Try a DIFFERENT SIO cord...make sure drive select is correct... and make sure the SIO2PC is not connected at the same time....I've seen a blown sio2pc bork the sio and removing allowed everything to work again..

lastly might you have another Atari to try it with as well?

You try another Atari and respeqt does not work...

It's probably a nick kennedy inspired sio2pc you got yourself there... try each handshake with and without the check mark using the r4 in the thread link, It should work..

also you could try using APE free trial with it... or r3

Correct. It was like the 1050 wasn't even plugged in. Same with the SIO2PC.

But hold on a minute, I wonder if I'm not falling victim to two separate problems. I was just looking at the 1050 owners guide and I *think* it might accidentally be set for drive 3. I believe I looked at it last night and saw both switches pushed to the right. I may have accidentally done that when I moved it. We'll see tonight.

As for SIO2PC, I think the issue you had with the new version of Aspe might be the cause of that problem. I'll try the older version (or even my copy of Atari810) and see.

did you try APE?

run the wizard and it will tell you the handshake line your device uses...

in respeqt make sure you are not using the nonstandard sio rate checkbox and be sure to start at the standard rates......make sure the os your using and divisor match up. reset each time

make sure the correct com port is typed in on respeqt...

What x86 OS are you using, Windows?

I only have two and I've tried every combo of handshaking and com port. Nothing is working. It worked before though...

Maybe I'm not resetting between changes, I'll try that.

check the rs 232 port with another device like a modem etc.

check the sio2pc on another pc's rs232 port....

oh lord I did a search on this on microsofts site and there's a crap ton of people who lost 'legacy' printer (lpt parallel) and 'legacy' com ports aka 16550 uarts etc intel and pci rs232 ports worse yet ongoing troubles with usb to rs232 adaptors as well ugh leave to windows...

check here https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/ff546963(v=vs.85).aspx

and here https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/ff546509(v=vs.85).aspx

Jay has a solution for some in this thread

OKAY here it is people all you have to do is go here

http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=PCI%5cVEN_8086%26DEV_1C3D

Once you get there download the file anywhere on your C: drive

Then go to your device mgr,

Where your PCI driver is missing (yellow flag)

Right click

Select browse my computer ( NOT SEARCH AUTOMATICALLY )

Select Browse, This PC, Then select C: drive ( That's ALL )

Then click next

will take about a min but it will find it and install it

YW ;)

you may not have the yellow flag but do it anyway..

some people said they have flush ports before and after use and other nutty stuff.

visit chipset manufacturer or board manufacturer or pc manufacturer site for fixes as well
