1050
Any more info on the really old SIO2PC built by 'someone' ten plus years ago? There were in ancient times the self powered SIO2PC which some had troubles with even with good old winders 98. And then there were the type that had their own actual power supply and were using a max232 chip for genuine system to system isolation and translation. Can you lay eyes on the chip used? Is it a 1489? Speaking of winders, make this a batch file and double click it. Follow the advice given in the batch file and report back how many 'ghost' devices you can only see now in 10's Device Mangler. If 10 even still has this functionality and it well may not work there. set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 start devmgmt.msc :: Be sure to also click on Show hidden devices :: in the View menu in Device Manager --OR-- you :: won't see them despite running this batch :: file to launch the Mangler in this special :: one off (whoda thunk it?) mode - thanks bill echo off cls Works a treat with XP and I was in there for halfhour uninstalling all the ghosts. USB is the worst, a record of every widget ever tried there and winders is reading every one of those entries looking for a status change - you know, to speed things up for you. +Larry
Are you "direct connected" with the SIO2PC? A problem with the 2nd SIO port on the 1050 (rare) would cause the SIO2PC to fail. Also I ask because with a regular 1489 setup, I could not daisy chain. 1489C or Max232 chained fine. Got that tip from Steve many years ago when I first started with APE. Did you try APE? As best I can see in your answers, you never replied to that. Did you try AspeQt? Do you have an old laptop or another desktop (with a serial port) that has XP? XP is pretty much bullet-proof with APE in my experience. It would be nice to rule in or out hardware or cables. If I were to bet, I'd bet on Win10 being the issue. -Larry
+DrVenkman
I don’t have an older device but RepseQt works fine with Win10 and an FTDI-based USB interface. I still think there’s potentially an issue with POKEY. Like I said, I had a 1200XL with the same issue (wouldn’t “see” anything plugged into the SIO port) and it turned out to be a POKEY issue. In fact, that was my long-suffering “Ugly Duckling” machine. Turned out to be a bad socket.
Tempest
Ok I'll have to try this. My device is a 2 x serial port/parallel port combo card I got a long time ago. I don't even know the brand anymore. SunMark made it for me about 12-13 years ago I think. It worked just fine on my Windows 10 box a few months ago before I had to reinstall it. It's directly connected to the PC. The 1050 isn't connected at all. No I never tried APE. I am using the APE Warp OS+ though. The 1200 is fine as the 1050 is now working (had the wrong drive select)
_The Doctor__
Was this an older windows flavor machine that was then upgraded over top to windows 10 and then re-installed fresh with windows 10? I ask because I have seen instances where when windows 8.1 or 10 installed over earlier OS it moves and converts drivers and just works where fresh installs or re installs don't move a thing and it breaks... I am hoping post # 25 is at least helpful... but this is another idea as I have already had to fix a machine by installing the original OS and drivers and the rolling up to whatever OS next painful but successful none the less... never got any real answers other than it worked made restore points and left it at that... Tempest
It occurs to me that the com ports on my PC might not be configured correctly. This is what it's currently set to: BPS: 9600 Data Bits: 8 Parity: None Stop Bits: 1 Flow Control: None What *should* it be set to?
Kyle22
It shouldnt matter what the default speed is set to. You can try setting it to 19200, but I cant say for sure if it will help. I use XP on all my Windows machines, and RespeQt and APE operate flawlessly.
Tempest
Yeah ok that didn't make a difference. I was just hoping it would be something simple. Sigh...
SS
I have a USB SIO2PC that I bought from Atari8warz about two or three years ago. It worked fine on both my desktop and my laptop under Windows 8.1 but stopped functioning once I upgraded to Win10. I assumed that the problem was related to my OpSys upgrade but I recently tried testing it with a borrowed Win7 machine and the device only worked for one game load and then I had to reboot the PC in order to get it to work again. So now I'm not quite sure *where* the error lies. I've pulled my hair out struggling to find an answer but now have just given up on the device altogether. I'm just going to give up and get myself a SIO2SD instead and call it a day; I don't need my hobby stressing me out so much.
Tempest
If Candle would ever get his Incognito v2 out I could just use that and my 800 and not have to worry about this.
_The Doctor__
it should be set to the highest speed your comm port supports and hardware flow control should be on... some cards will not control the rts cts dtr and dsr line without it being set. some drivers don't care at all... Tempest
I set hardware flow control and left it at 19200 just in case but still no go. I also checked the cable and it looks fine. The card is a rosewill card from NewEgg IIRC.
Tempest
So I tried APE and it said it detected my SIO2PC on COM4 (good so far) but then says that the RS232 driver failed to load and only USB mode was enabled. Any ideas?
Tempest
Success! I tried software handshaking and it worked. What's up with that?
_The Doctor__
did you try none as a handshake also? try to set the windows baud rate at the next higher matching pokey divisor If it was detected but fails to load... try to re install APE, it would appear windows is not seeing the rs232 hardware and flow control properly.. Tempest
Yes that works too even at 3x speed. Oddly 3x speed only sped the loading up by a few seconds with the game I was testing it with (Crypt of the Undead)

_The Doctor__
you should be able to use hardware mode in both pieces of software...... software flow control has never been the most excellent solution, I always choose none or hardware If I understand correctly your using software driver on both APE and respeqt...?
