Nes (black box) Basketball and the lack thereof

I hate to say go elsewhere, but if there would be anyone who likely would have a really solid or even sketchy answer would be one of those historian level collectors at NintendoAge. Despite being Nintendo overall, they're more NES hardcore than the rest when it comes to interesting stuff. Maybe one of them will have some oddball back alley info why they never bothered. It is entirely strange given they bothered with something like volleyball but not basketball. The other sports have pretty strong followings in various markets that they made sense with baseball, tennis, soccer(football), US football(10yd fight) and so on.

With the exception of Slalom, the black box releases are comprised entirely of games that were already available in Japan. The original Japanese versions of these games were handled exclusively by Nintendo themselves (Irem's titles aside), and Nintendo did not have a basketball game in Japan during this period. Without a Nintendo-owned basketball game already existing in Japan for an easy re-release in North America, this is likely why the sport is not featured in the black box series.
