Oh - I totally agree about not derailing this thread with a lengthy discussion of the expansion box. :) I merely misunderstood the focus on cartridge functionality and wondered if cartridges were somehow imperative to the functionality of the device. Question answered, then. :)

I completed two 1088XEL custom builds for some local 8bit fans just recently.  How much are you looking to sell the kit for?  Does it come with a Realan H80 case?

I soldered in the the replacement LED's, and they light up as expected, 5v good, power on lights up,  but i get no boot, the lights on the BOB board flicker on power up so I guess I have a short somewhere.

How's your trouble shooting going?

Havent had much time to look into it, but I did check the orientation of the CPU and Antic and both are correct ( pin 1 facing the edge of the board) . I might try re-soldering their sockets in case I have  a bad one or two connections there.

Just a quick question

Whats the difference between PAL ANTIC CO14887 and PAL ANTIC-B CO21698 when it comes to building a PAL 1088XEL? The BOM lists them both; are they completely interchangeable?

It really comes down to price and availability, since either one will work in the 1088XEL due to having SRAM (differences in DRAM refresh required different ANTIC chips).

Quick question:

Does anybody have the full pin-out of the Rev. 2.0 1088XEL RGB cable ?

I wonder esp. if it carries Stereo but Id love to have the full pin out. Im adding a RGB connector FlashJazzcat style to my 600XL but want to be future compatible :)

[EDIT] what about the left-right stereo mix up ? Does that cable fix that ? If so, Ill fix my 600XL 13p. DN too :D

The DIN13 end is on the 1088XEL schematic on Michael's site.

Here it is.

For future reference this schematic is also available from the 1088XEL Accessories page. And yes it corrects the left and right stereo channel mix-up as well. Will work right out of the box with a completely stock non-modded 1088XEL and Sophia RevB, and will also work with a stock VBXE as well (XE model).

Thanks Michael !

And do you happen to know if the cable that coolnovelties sells is exactly according to that schematic ? :D

I absolutely HATE soldering DIN 13-pin plugs.....I remember it from my ST days (back when they were "new")....and will gladly pay some money for a ready made cable :)

Yes: it's compatible with the Cool Novelties cable, as are all VBXE Ataris I put together nowadays (unless the owner intends to use a 1084S monitor or similar, in which case I build them a DIN13->DB9/Dual RCA audio cable). Perhaps Cool Novelties can be persuaded to make them as well, and I can finally place video cable fabrication firmly in the past. :)

It's too bad we don't have any +9.5V or higher voltage inside our A8s, it would be great to put that on pin 8 of the SCART connector so it would force 4:3 picture size to the TV......I totally HATE the squashed to 16:9 pictures I see all the time :D

Mmmm, maybe with a voltage doubler circuit...it's simple enough :D

Compatible or 100% identical ?

I mean...does the cool novelties cable swap the L-R audio signals too ?

I agree about the horrid stretched ARs seen in many YouTube videos these days, but I don't experience a problem here, since every TV I have used has a "Just scan" or "4:3" setting on the OSD.

Compatible and 100 per cent identical. It took some time to decide on a pinout which made sense and was flexible at the same time, but everything is perfect and synchronised now.

Great, thanks for your quick  answers Jon, ordering one now :)

Yes of course, every TV can be set to the proper aspect ratio but people either are too stupid to find the setting or don't seem to care.....don't know which is worse..... :D

Crap......I remember I had a schematic that created the required voltage for pin 16 from the sync signal ...I think with a zenerdiode and a cap to charge the cap to a voltage defined by the zener using the sync pulses.....I used it for my arcade machines where I installed a TV IIRC....but of course can't find it on my Mac now....argh...

By the way, does the RGB control signal carry 5V ? the input is specced at 3V max by SCART definition....not sure if it will hurt any TVs ?

RGB CTRL = 5V. Never seen or heard of this causing an issue in nine years. ;)

The voltage doubler circuit used for the color pot produces 8.5 volts. Perhaps swapping schottky diodes for the 1N914 diodes might boost it up a bit more. Not sure if 8.5 volts would be enough, and also don't know if tapping this signal would produce enough current to serve both needs (depends upon the impedance of the the SCART input).Too bad I wasn't more aware of this issue during the 1088XEL development, since it would have been nice to provide the proper voltage for 4:3 mode switching for the SCART.

Ah didn't know about that one....current is not an issue here....it's close to 0. That's why it can be done with a simple set-up like I mentioned...a cap being charged by the sync pulses :) I was quite impressed by the cleverness of this simple trick back then....wish I could find the schematic back....argh....

Yeah, trouble is that

1) the cable coolnovilties sells probably doesn't carry anything to pin 8 on the SCART connector

2) no idea if an added signal like that would screw up ST compatibility with that cable ;) (if it IS ST compatible that is :))

3) some people might actually like the screwed 16:9 look....  :-o  :_(

The idea with the diode and cap (IIRC) can be mounted inside the SCART connector which is nice....no need for an extra wire (hack).
