What are my RGB or S-video options?

I thought I saw a thread about a plug and play RGB but it looks like that's still a work in process.

 

Is anyone currently selling a kit? Amazingly, there doesn't appear to be much on YouTube regarding this topic.

I believe the RGB kit that is available for the atari 8bit computers can be used on the 5200. For just composite and s-video, I would go with Bryan's UAV board. I haven't looked into the installation of that board into a 5200 yet, but I would imagine it isn't any more difficult and likely easier than most others I've seen.

Bryan is an AA member here and that is his AA username. Just send him a PM to order one of his UAV boards. But it isn't a drop in board either. None of them really are. I think the 5200 since it has a 4050 chip on it. requires that you solder the header for the UAV ontop of the 4050 and then attach to the UAV, then jumpers are needed to connect the pins specific for the 5200. From there you still need to solder wires and install RCAs/S-video to the console.

Your RGB options for the 5200 include the VBXE and the SOPHIA/SOFIA board. The second one is more of a plug-in but I think it does require one or two wires to be soldered.

Actually with the 5200, if you get the plug-in version of Brian's UAV then you can just pull the 4050 chip from the socket and plug in the UAV. Then you have only one wire that needs to be soldered, and it has screw terminals for attaching wires to the video out.

To the best of my knowledge, he wasn't recommending pulling the 4050, rather soldering the socket onto the 4050, then inserting the UAV into the socket. I know on the light-sixer tutorial he made, that's how he recommended doing it, and that's how i've done it on both my light sixer and two different 5200's..

 

At that point you just need the video feed in, ground it, and composite out. I've not done an S-Video mod with this particular board, however, the video quality is so good with composite that I haven't felt the need to go through the extra hassle.

Actually, if you look a few posts down from the one with the pictures of the 5200, Bryan says that only soldering required with the plug-in board is one wire to get the color signal.
