DavidMil
I have a 5200 game machine that I pulled out of my attic (sorry if you're tired of hearing about the attic) and one of the controllers seems to have developed a open wire between the 15 pin female end and the 11 pin connector inside the controller. I had already ordered two gold repair kits from Best Elect. thinking that was the problem. It fixed one of the controllers but not the other. So I bought one from ebay and as you have probably already figured out it also had a broken wire. Then I bought two more and they had the same problem! Being hard headed and sometimes optimistic I bought a fourth one. Yes, that's right, same problem. I've gone so far as to cut the 15 pin female connector off of one cable and strip the insulation off the other end ( where it goes into the 11 pin connector) and still get an open. On every one of them the opens are in the two color wires, either the white and red, white and orange, white and green, or white and black. Has anyone else ever run into this problem before, or as I said; is this my standard bad luck? DavidMil PS. I don't post on the 5200 board cause no one ever responds. _The Doctor__
intense game play leads to yank the joystick, the joystick is connected to the strain relief and the strain relief to the wire and the wire connected to the strain and plug on the other end. your opens will be right in the general area of the strain reliefs at either joystick or plug port end... I don't remember but I remember you could slowly break the bond of the wire sheath insulator from the strain relief and stretch it, pull the wire out, cut it strip the each level of insulation and push it back through and use some contact cement on the last inch of the outer sheath. heated it up a bit. re attach wire and back in business at least on the joystick end... DavidMil
I plan on calling Best and/or MyAtari tomorrow and see if they have any 5200 controller cables. If neither of them do, I'll see if I can get a couple of 12 foot extensions and cut them in half and then but a DB15 hood on two of the six foot pieces. If have also discovered that the stress relief piece at the controller will slide off with a little WD40 and some twisting, If I can't find a couple of 12 foot extensions, I'll look for a 14 wire cable. _The Doctor__
if you slid it off already just cut it back past the broken wire.. slide it back in re attach the wires and your probably set...

I'm a little concerned because I caught my wife going up the stairs to the attic with a piece of chalk. I believe she might have been planning to put down some false trails...
