sprazzi
I have the chance -maybe less than 50 euros/dollars/pounds- to acquire one sony pvm crt monitor 20n5e, just for playing. Does anyboy have experience plugging a old console to this model? is it worth it? I do guess I'll need special cables for it to start with. Thank you
Austin
The model you referenced only does composite and s-video and has a line count of 500. It'll be a small improvement over a similar consumer Trinitron but not leaps and bounds. Is that worth it to you (especially considering the size)? It's your money. For S-Video you can use a standard cable. For composite you will need a RCA to BNC adapter for the composite video signal. Audio is still handled via the typical RCA cables (one single one, the monitor only does mono). Bratwurst
I would happily pay $50 for a local pick-up of a 500 line s-video monitor.
+save2600
Yep, one of the best CRT's ever made. Talking their PVM line in general. I too would purchase if I could find one locally.
Bratwurst
Haha, 'only composite and s-video'. If you are so hard up for RGB you could probably hack it into the on screen display which this model has. But at 500 lines most people will not care. I know I wouldn't.

Being hard up for RGB is part of the point in springing for a professional monitor. Sure, a 500 line PVM will still look better than a consumer CRT. But at 14 inches you are sacrificing other aspects like screen size and audio quality out of the box. As an aside, I personally have a 14 inch 600 line PVM. Composite looks amazing on it but I have to sit about a foot or two away from the thing. I use it all the time when I am streaming and recording but it's not exactly couch-worthy material. When I am just relaxing and playing I get a lot more satisfaction out of using my larger consumer Trinitrons (23" and 25" respectively, one has S-Video and the other has Component). The picture quality on those things is still great, especially S-Video or Component. It also doesn't hurt that the price on those was "free". Something for the OP to consider.
sprazzi
Thank you all. Your inputs are precious to me. I think I'll try to make the seller come down a little.... or just let it go.
Newsdee
I have a 14" PVM, its a bit beaten up but works well. I'd only recommend one with RGB though. I use my FPGAs with it and it looks great.

I know I'm doing a bit of a bump on this thread, but you don't need to hack the OSD of this unit at all for RGB. They sold the same model with RGB as the PVM-20N6, and all the spots on the PCBs for the required RGB components are still there. It's just a case of soldering it all in, and creating holes for the BNC jacks and front panel RGB button. I am planning on doing it, it might seem not worth it, but at the 35 euros I spend, I think it makes for a good project. I can always upgrade to something better in the future.
