Intellivision Controller Sticks from Germany

[apologies in advance for reposting this, but it seemed better in its own thread]

Anyone in North America interested in getting Intellivision Controller Sticks from Germany? These are recent designs, not retro, but still seem pretty cool to add to a collection. I am planning to order 1 for myself and the process involves a little bit of work (that site mainly just ships within Europe). I'm willing to order a few extras of these if people are interested.

How much it costs depends on how many I can order in 1 shipment. If I order 10 of these, then the total cost should be $23 per unit which includes shipping within the US.

they appear to be stick on, so no need to disassemble the controller.

What is that little optional "mate" they refer to in step C on the back of the packaging?

If I Google translate their page it says that there are "two inserts":

The controllers of the Intellivision console consist of disks called disks. With you can steer in 8 different directions. Originally they were designed for sports games, probably with a reason why other types of games are difficult to control.

With our controller sticks you can now give your controllers a new look and improve the controls fundamentally. Similar to other consoles you can now control with a joystick.

The supplied packaging contains two sticks for sticking to the Intellivision Controller. Simply peel off the protective film on the back and place it on the glass. Pressing. Finished! And to make the control a little more precise, there are also two inserts for the controllers in the scope of delivery.

Delivery:
2 sticks
2 inserts to improve control
Manual

My guess is that the sponge is an alternative or addition to the spring that is underneath the disc to soften or stiffen the controls. However, this is just a guess.

Odd that it doesn't look like it goes around the entire disc... It looks like it just goes on one little section which seems like it would give an odd compression in one portion of the disc.

If you order some please do a comparison review for us with and without the mate installed

I have an Intv2 with one stickler (or something) on one controller. I don't use that console often, but when I do I kind of use it like a long thumb pad with my thumb on top of it pushing the disc around. It is a little too long for that purpose, but I've not cut it lower yet.

Unfortunately there is not mention on how tall these guys are.

I may get a pair from you, but I am on the fence right now.

I guess it's a fine collectible, but is it useful?

i mean coleco had such sticks on the controller and i never liked it further it isn't a new idea, what are your experiences? i'm used to use the disc and it's by far not bad.

Personally i didn't think it will enhance the control of the games, the stick makes it only more difficult to control the direction, the lever even when it's small changes the behave completly.

It's not what a analogue joystick offers, you will have the same short way but a lever which shortens the way even more.

Ever need a translation?

Ask "Gernötli"

Let's see, i will think about a real cool design for a 16 directional controller, suitable to play action games.

In my imagination it should help you to find the proper direction, sort of grooves in which the controller will sink in a little to grant you get the proper direction, no slipping and sliding.

A liitle deeper in the main 4 directions, less in the 8 and even less for the 16.

You can see especially for Hats big differences in how good they are.

Last "Trust" joystick was shit not only because it was made extremely cheap, if i compare it to the digital Logitech pad both Hats fail even the one of the Logitech dual stick.

The digipad is cool to play 8 directional console games, you never miss a direction, it's extremely precise (it's therefore named "precision") and leads you in the proper direction.

It has well pressure points which click what you will feel and responds you "button pressed".

Many Hats tend to fall in the diagonal directions, this makes them insecure to play arcade games.

Thus let's disassemble the precision pad and see what is the "magic" behind.

I never would like to change the clumsy design, ah maybe a little, it really forces clamps if you play long.

Overall it isn't a bad design as most felt in the very past, the shape is just not ergonomic, action buttons are to hard to press.

When i bought me a couple of years my "brand new inty" it's really a rare used model and i didn't remembered the action buttons are this hard to press that you will soon get a clamp.

First i did is to remove the extra layer which make it so hard to press, but still it isn't good.

At least they don't fixed the bad design with cardboard like for the Trust pad, this i never will understand, "oh we had a stupid idea to mount the button in 90° angle on the board, let's fix it with some cardboard, that will help until the customer baught the product".

That small piece of "cardboard" looked like "hand-drawn japanese paper", which is fine to make batiks or other nice stuff but certainly it isn't ment to fix bad designed controllers.

Except you use it to design a well designed controller on it, what the purpose of paper should be, but for this it hasn't to be "hand-drawn".

(besides i had the chance as boy to draw paper, make a copperplate and print it on a original Gutenberg, thanks to our national museum.

I didn't own much i just have some fine memories and working with medieval technology is one of them).

But yeah tell me your experiences with mounted sticks on the disc, i'm curious.

If these are made well then it's what i think of, much better as a attached stick on the disc.

I like the design of the Hat and it wouldn't need the analogue sticks in my opinion.

a pure digital version would be better, or fitting enough for the Intellivision.

That's really a good design, do you notice that the Hat/Disc is split?

Edit: the outer rim would be a optical spinner though i'm not sure how useful it would be for the inty.

Edit: of course that's just a CAD and the controller isn't produced (yet), but interest seems to be strong.

However maybe he's just boasting, nonetheless it's a good layout.

("i'm not into electronics" - "maybe i do the electronics" makes me suspicious)

I was looking for experiences with the controller attachement, especially what exactly is the purpose of the additional layer and how to mount it or where, but recently i can't find any information except what you found already by the producer/retailer (i guess 0711games let them produce, they also offer modifications to HDMI connection for Atari, Coleco, Intellivision).

One thing i didn't feel so fine about this idea is that you glue the sticks on the disc, in other words once attached you won't remove them or reattach them by need, it's a permanent modification.

Either the sticker glues to hard and the controller is modded forever or it glues to less and the stick will fall off if you use it, at least this i expect.

I guess if you anyway have to open the controller to attach the extra layer you would better design a complete replacement disc with a stick on it instead of sticking it on it.

This would spare you the original part.

On the other hand, like i said, sticked on you won't remove them, no problem if you have spare controllers, but for ppl like me with a single original Intellivision I and the two controllers it's not a good idea to modify them in this way.

If you don't feel pleased with it the stick wil be hard to remove probably.

Further the original controllers disc has a thin golden color layer on it, this is abrasive and probably the sticker won't glue well on it because the layer will remove with the glue.

I assume to make it really sticking on it you would have first to clean off that layer if it's not already gone due to use.

Well i don't like glued things, i was slapped for such from daddy, not true but he used to make jokes about that, "it won't work you will see" - "but daddy it works" - "yeah, the question is how long".

Well you don't glue especially not on PCB's, i thought....

until i opened my JBL boombox last year because it was broken and what did i had to see?

a glued part, a heavy part sort of graphite piece glued on the board with this sticky black tar like "gun gum", "transferring resistance what is that i never heard about".

Gosh humidy and everything will sneak under this only on two of four sides glued thingy, corrosion is predicted if the heavy part doesn't falls off in summer when the

gun gum gets hot and fluid.

And that was what happened it was summer and this piece just falls off because of temperature, someone should slap them in their face, them are no boys playing around, they got payed well for such.

What exactly the purpose is of this part isn't to clear to me, maybe the purpose is just to fail after a certain time, it has a purpose, with a simple bridge the bluetooth failed to work.

It's strangewisely numbered similar to a part which is on the opposite side of the board.

And i had to make me a head how to fix it, glueing wont' work and i don't like, soldering but how if it's mounted on a bare contact (another thing you should never do).

I really hate this cheap shit today, connections which are made to fail, superfast HD's but a connection worse as a USB. a little vibration and they lose contact because it's predicted not to have a good contact, just copper on copper, that's really bullshit technology. Everything about my daddy said "you don't do it this way".

Finally i soldered it on the board with two fine copper hairs i took out of a cable, that helped, it works now well and will never fall off.

You don't glue!

Experience, i glued a lot as child ;)

since i owned totally three intellivision in my youth i remember that i once modified a controller due to longings of my comrades which felt uncomfortable withthe disc.

My daddys repository was quite big and soon i found a fitting grip to mount on them, but i didn't glued it, i used a classic screw for this.

However i wasn't pleased with my modification, this i remember also.

  • 2 weeks later...
  • 1 month later...

They have arrived. Out of 10 ordered, 8 are already claimed. This means that 2 are still available for $23 via PayPal (this includes shipping within the USA). Note: if any of the 8 claimed go unpaid for, I may make those also available for purchase (unlikely to happen).

Photos are below. My comments on them are:

  • The joysticks are attached to the Intellivision discs via an adhesive sticker
  • The sponges are option to install under the disc to change the feel
  • I have not attached them or tested them out. My own pair was purchased solely to add to the collection.
  • The printing is on a sheet of paper from an inkjet printer (hence a little fuzzy looking)
    • Note: there is some variation in print quality (ex: some printed colors are lighter than the one photo'ed below).
