And here's one more bonus for the 2018 stats: a list of the Top 10 games for each system, all-time. (Systems with fewer than 10 games logged aren't included.)

Top 10 games for each system, all-time:

RCA Studio II:
1. Bowling (293)
2. Berzerk (126)
3. Space War (72)
4. Pinball (55)
5. Baseball (48)
6. Scramble (32)
7. Freeway (19)
8. Climber (13)
9. Asteroids (11)
9. Pacman (11)

I was not expecting to see these titles with this system. Are those mostly homebrews?

Agreed! After crunching the numbers for just my own household I have a major appreciation for what an incredible amount of work you put into running this tracker every year, goldenband. I sure appreciate it too, the past 3 years I've been participating in the tracker have added some seriously needed structure to my gaming habits and made me think a lot more about what I play and the enjoyment I get out of it.

So, thanks! Thanks a ton! I'll be hoping to see the tracker up and running in 2019 as well. :)

Jin, you are very welcome! And thank you for your kind words of appreciation -- they do mean a lot -- and for your comments about adding structure to your gaming habits: that's exactly how this tracker has been helpful for me.

That's also an excellent segue into my announcement: as of the start of 2019, I'll be stepping down from running the tracker.

But never fear: carlsson has graciously agreed to take over the thread! So starting in 2019, he'll be your host. Of course he's an old hand at this, having run the excellent Modern Gaming tracker.

carlsson and I have chatted about this possibility for several years, but some developments in my personal and professional life in 2018 made it clear that this was the right time for this transition. It works out well since I'd wanted to see the tracker through at least 2018, to make the 10-year anniversary.

As for my reasons for stepping down, don't worry -- it's nothing too calamitous, just a combination of small stuff and bigger stuff. (A large part of it is just work scheduling and computer problems.) And I fully intend to keep participating as a player, of course!

Thanks to everyone for participating over the past 8 years and for all your kind words; to carlsson for taking up the reins; and, of course, to cvga, for starting this whole thing in the first place!

Aww… it will be a bit of a bummer to not have you at the head of this long running AtariAge institution thegoldenband, but carlsson did do a fantastic job running the modern tracker this year so I'd say you picked a most worthy successor. And hey, 10 long years is a pretty darn good run for a hobby activity like this! I'm just glad to hear you'll be sticking around as a player every week, because we'd sure miss you if you left altogether.

I hope the passing of the reigns makes your life a little more relaxing and less stressful, and gives you a bit more time to play some of those games you've been doing all the record keeping for over the past decade. Thank you again for your many long years of service to the AtariAge community and I'll be looking forward to seeing you again in 2019 as a fellow player! :)

I have been moderator in a different (not gaming-related) forum for a couple of years, so I know a little about how huge a commitment it is. And holy shit, have you lived up to that task, thegoldenband! Reliably collecting and crunching those stats every week for all those years is something you can be really proud of. My hat is off to you!

Also, not quitting before an adequate successor is in place is a somewhat forgotten virtue in today's world. Too often, projects like this die a miserable death because this responsibility is being neglected. Another star on your chest for that.

Finally, welcome to your new job, carlsson! I wrote "adequate successor" above, and I meant it. I have a good feeling about the future of this tracker.

I was not expecting to see these titles with this system [RCA Studio II]. Are those mostly homebrews?

Bowling, Space War, Baseball and Freeway were original Studio II titles. Pinball was featured on the MPT-03 which we used to call a clone but nowadays is considered a licensed implementation of the coloured Studio III that never was manufactured by RCA themselves.

Berzerk, Scramble and Pac-Man are homebrews by Paul Robson, while Climber is a homebrew by Lee Romanow. I can't recall if Paul or Lee made Asteroids, but the number of developers of homebrew games so far pretty much is down to these two, plus a few more people fiddling with the system.

All of these titles exist on the limited run multicart by Flip, and can of course be played through an emulator as well.

I want to thank you thegoldenband for a great job for many years. Reading your weekly updates made playing a lot more fun. And all your posts last night with ten year histories were great. A lot of interesting reading.

Thank you also Carlson for taking this over. It is good to know a great day tradiation will go forward in a very competent way. I look forward to your weekly posts. Happy NewsYears to both of you and all the players.

Thanks to all for your very kind words! :)

I've really enjoyed maintaining the tracker -- it's one of the few routines I've ever been able to maintain in my entire life so far :D -- and I'm glad to have helped it become what will, I hope, be a permanent fixture at AtariAge.

And with that in mind, it's the perfect opportunity to note that the new thread is up and running, thanks to carlsson:

What have you actually PLAYED tracker for 2019 (Season 12)

I look forward to seeing y'all there!

Arcade:

Daytona USA 2 - 2 min.

Sorry for digging into what you played almost three years ago, but do you remember if this was Battle on the Edge (1998) or Power Edition (1999)? In the long run it doesn't matter much, except in case someone else in the future will play either or both these two similarly named games.

Arcade

Yars Revenge - 5 min (I didnt even know there was a Yars Revenge arcade until today. It didnt seem to work 100%, though. Really struggled with control. Otherwise, just like the 2600 version.)

In my hunt to go through all the arcade games previously played, do you remember if this game actually was Vector's Revenge (a game for Windows, Mac and Linux, possibly emulated within MAME as well) or something else? I tried all the Google-fu I could muster but wasn't able to locate this even as a recent remake for some kind of arcade hardware.

Sorry, I really don't.  Going back and looking through pics of that trip, I don't have any of that machine.  It may have been some home built thing or something?  But I just don't remember any details.  Sorry.  :(

Sorry, I don't remember... I don't even remember which arcade this was in since I visited multiple ones in that week. I didn't know there were two versions of that game... I can only remember that the version I played didn't move (either because that machine doesn't move or because it was somewhat broken), and that my father actually tried to discourage me from visiting arcades alone. ;-). I can try to visit those arcades again, but right now I suspect they are all closed because of the pandemic.

Thanks. We'll simply assume one of them as 2 min more or less makes little difference in the long run. Actually it seems to be rather common on the arcade side to release multiple games with almost the same name, all being sequels or branches to an original game which is a bit confusing, like the publisher couldn't decide which game to put their money into next so they had several developed more or less in parallel and get those out into the arcades, all claiming to be the natural successor to the first, popular game.
