What have you actually PLAYED tracker for 2018 (Season 11)

Recommended Posts

Here are my times for this past week (September10th through 16th) on classic systems...

Atari 2600:

Red Sea Crossing - 4 min.

Seawolf - 17 min.

I had only been playing two Atari 2600 games for a rather short time. Red Sea Crossing seems to be widely available now (also as a ROM), but it's actually not that great, thus one game was enough to realize that.

Seawolf (by Xype) is your typical submarine shooter, which is similar to other Atari 2600 titles like Air-Sea Battle and Missile War.

Apart from that, I continued work on the pinball part of Baby Pac-Man on the Atari 7800, but I don't have anything nice to show yet.

5200-

Mario Bros.- 55min

A8-

Threshold- 2hrs 25min

Marauder- 15min

C64-

Threshold- 58min, rolled again.

FYI- it takes going through the complete game 3 times to roll it. There's a few differences between this one and A8 or Vic 20. The horizontal formation levels from A8 are absent and the fuel runs out slower, rate of fire is faster, so are enemies. Where the A8 and VIC versions are more of a battle to shoot everything before running out of fuel, on C64, fuel isn't an issue and twitch movements and fire are your concerns as enemies shoot a lot more rounds at you. In all 3, overheating laser is about the same.

Either way, it's still one hella game and my fave on these old computers. The original "bullet hell shooter".

Evenin' yall

Not a whole log for me this week...

NES (via PSP emulation)

Super Mario Bros. - 5 min (Just messing around with this one on the emulator. Hadn't tried it before. Jumping felt a little off... probably some lag... but I don't remember feeling anything like that when I was playing Castlevania on the same emulator. I didn't do so hot, but I'm terribly out of practice, so it's not unexpected.)

Jaguar (emulated)

Checkered Flag - 45 min (Playing some for the Jaguar HSC. I got a really good lap time, but I'm worried that it might be because I'm using an emulator and rom instead of an actual Jaguar and cartridge. I didn't see anything turned on in the emulator that might help me. The biggest thing that might be giving me an advantage over other players is that I'm using an Xbox One controller instead of a Jaguar controller. Anyway... currently first place on this round of the HSC, but looking ahead I don't have a way to play most of the games that are planned, so I'm sure I'll fall behind in the overall standings pretty quick.)

Here are my times for this past week (September 17th through 23rd)...

sorry, I haven't actually been playing anything. I was busy taking part in programming an Atari 7800 version of Baby Pac Man, and while I've been testing it as well, you can't really call this "playing" because the part I tested (the pinball part) isn't playable yet. As of now, you can only launch the ball and watch it going through a curve and disappear.

Therefore, no times for me this week.

My time for the week:

Genesis:

Fatal Rewind - 419 min.

Haven't really had time to play video games for about two weeks: too busy at work. But since my birthday is coming up and I have to work that day, I let myself take a weekend day off, and just concentrate on mapping out and beating Fatal Rewind, which I did on Normal difficulty.

(In fact, it was a 1CC -- once you learn the game's levels, it gets much easier. We'll see what Hard and Hardest are like, though.)

Arcade:
Centipede - 5 min.
Millipede - 2 min.
Missile Command - 3 min.

PC DOS:
Stunts / 4D Sports - 20 min.

I took a week off the Atari Hires HSC, and barely played anything at all. In the weekend I got to play a few arcade games emulated on a RPi 3 with trackball, plus that I played some more 4D Sports, estimated times.

C64

Galencia 183

Jam It 16

Jumpman 87

Sub Hunter 11

Threshold 107

After trying a demo and a cracked version, I bought a retail download of the homebrew, Galencia. It is a great game that captures the original fun of Galaga while adding just the right level of additional content. Sticking with vertical shooters, I had to try Threshold since it had gotten so much attention in the tracker recently. I switched back and forth between Threshold and Galencia in short bursts during the week. Threshold is a passable shooter, but after I finished the last wave, I wasn't motivated to keep going.

I finally did finish all the Intermediate stages in Jumpman without using any sort of cheat, save state, or level skip. I got started on Advanced, but I can't decide if I am going to try to get through those.

This is going to be one of those two week wrap-up posts, since I was too busy to do a proper one last week. I'll do my best to keep it short though! :)

In terms of overall play time, last week was almost entirely classic pre-2000's games and this week was fairly evenly split between modern and classic games. Both weeks were quite a bit smaller than usual for the spousal unit and I, with roughly half of our usual gaming time logged each week since we've been watching a lot of movies lately and going out and doing social activities with friends before the weather gets too cold to want to go out much. Last week was predominantly focused on Sega games since I picked up a copy of Genesis 6-Pak on eBay, and while waiting for it to arrive in the mail we played through Sonic 3 & Knuckles together via emulation on the Wii; trading off the controller between zones.

Once 6-Pak arrived in the mail I set about playing Streets of Rage, since I had never played it before but had heard lots of good things about it, and it ended up being a really enjoyable game even if I was never able to beat it on either of my two attempts. After that the misses played a bit of Golden Axe then I gave Revenge of Shinobi a try. Unfortunately I've never been any good at Revenge of Shinobi and even after 25 years of off and on attempts to get better at it I still can't get past the first part of the second level and always get stuck at the end of the waterfall area, where you have to make a series of precision jumps on tiny and rapidly descending logs to make it to the exit.

That was pretty much it for Sega gaming and the only other game played last week was Alien Trilogy for the PlayStation, which the misses decided to play through again after we watched all 4 of the classic Alien movies on VHS. Alien Trilogy has long been her favorite first-person shooter and she's been having a great time playing it again. In fact, it was the only game she played this week and I'd say she's about 2/3 of the way through it at this point. For my gaming time this week I gave the absurdly difficult Castlevania: Chronicles on the PlayStation a try (I had just cleaned and refurbished my old PS1 controller and needed a game to test it out with) then spent an hour and a half or so trying out No More Heroes on the Wii, since I scored a complete copy of it for $7 at Half Price Books earlier in the week, and while it was really quirky and a lot of fun I quickly got distracted by Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon on the 3DS.

Looking ahead to next week I know the misses is going to be continuing and likely finishing up her play through of Alien Trilogy on the PlayStation, and I've been having a great time with Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon on the 3DS so I'm planning on playing my respective game through to the end as well. Once Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon is done though I do think I'll probably get back to No More Heroes, since I did really enjoy the short time I spent playing it, and I think the carbon based wife-form has a few more PlayStation games in her sights for after she beats Alien Trilogy. So until next time, and as always, best wishes and happy gaming to you and yours! :)

ColecoVision:

Turbo

Chuck Norris

Frenzy

Dragonfire

Turbo is a damn impressive game on the Coleco and has held up better than I thought it would. The huge buildings, the day/night cycle, and the attempt to create an illusions that cars were at the bottom of a hill.

My times for the week...

TurboGrafx-16

Legendary Axe - 5 min (Was playing this one at the laundromat again waiting for clothes to dry. Really wish the emulation was faster on the PSP. It throws my timing off.)

Genesis

TNMT Hyperstone Heist - 30 min (Such a good beat-em-up. The enemies are a little repetitive, but what beat-em-up doesn't have that issue. Leo is my go to on this game which is different from other TMNT games. Wouldn't mind having the cart, but it's a bit expensive, iirc.)

Jaguar

Tempest 2000 - 36 min (Just one run though on Tempest this week. Think I still got into the 400,000's somewhere. I remember doing really well up until a certain point where I lost about 6 or 7 lives on one level. Gah! Still considering getting Tempest 4000 but just haven't been able to pull the trigger on it yet.)

We usually track the minutes per game. Guessing is fine if you don't know exactly.
