Lynx model 1 differences

As I'm sure most people here know, there are two different versions of the original model of the Lynx. One version has the cross or plus sign d-pad and the other one has the circular d-pad. I have seen both the PAG-0200 and the PAG-0201 part numbers on each version. I have seen various theories on here about the different versions like the cross d-pad was sold overseas and the circular d-pad was sold here in the U.S., which if true then why would there be U.S. FCC compliance stickers on some of those cross d-pad Lynxes? I have also seen somebody say the cross d-pad was the revision and the circular one was the original which is the opposite of what I thought. There are also color variations of the circular one where a gray or black shell will have gray or black buttons. I have never seen a color variation for the cross one.

So does anybody have any concrete information about when and where these versions came out? Is there a box for the cross d-pad version? I have never seen a box with a picture of the cross d-pad Lynx on it, which does lend credence to it being a revision and Atari deciding to not change the box art. On the box for the circular one it mentions 8-directional joypad which I thought it meant the circular one, but I am sure the cross one was also 8-directional because it would be hard to play games with only being able to use 4 directions.

I know there are different part numbers for the second model of the Lynx, but right now I am just curious about the first model. One thing I noticed about the sticker on the back that has the part number was that the PAG-0200 stickers all had another sticker for the FCC compliance information and all that I have seen were made in Taiwan. The PAG-0201 sticker had the FCC information printed on the sticker and were made in Taiwan and Japan. Could they have changed the part number just because they added in the FCC compliance blurb?

Share your knowledge and hopefully where that knowledge came from so I can finally put these questions to rest.

No concrete information but.....

I got a circle D pad Lynx the Christmas it came out in the UK. Either 1989 or 1990?

Within 6 months the power socket gave up due to all the playtime and in that year I received a replacement but with the cross D pad.

Even now I remember noticing the difference and preferred the circle D pad.
