In no particular order:

SMB 1

SMB 2

SMB 3

Zelda 1

Zelda 2

Castlevania 1

Castlevania 3

DK Jr

Shadowgate

Galaga

Most people would fill up half this list with Mario and Zelda. Mega Man, Castlevania, and Ninjas of some variety would fill out the rest. The NES' Top 10 doesn't vary too much from person to person.

Asking to pick only 10 from the NES library would be like asking what your favorite 10 stars are from the sky. Nevertheless, I'll try it. In no particular order, here are my 10 favorite NES/Famicom games:

1. The Guardian Legend

2. The Legend of Zelda

3. Guerrilla War

4. Bubble Bobble

5. Mappy

6. Tecmo Super Bowl

7. Super Mario Bros. 3

8. Golf

9. Popeye

10. Donkey Kong Jr.

Bill & Ted's Excellent Video Game Adventure is #1 on my shit list, but only because I'm one of those fortunate souls who has never played Jekyll & Hyde yet (I hear it's atrocious).

I officially declare you to have the Best Taste of everyone on this thread. I literally popped in here to say "I have no idea what 2-10 are, but 1 is The Guardian Legend. Fantastic game!

Although I said my list is in no particular order, The Guardian Legend indeed is #1 for me. My favorite NES game ever. Still have the cartridge, too!

I burned myself out long long ago on the usual 'best' NES games. Today if I turn on an NES and want to play something I tend to start these games more than anything:

Zelda 2 (usually to around level 5 or so before I stop)

Lolo 1, 2, 3 (also Eggerland, especially the crazy FDS version)

Balloon Fight

Contra 1/2

.. can't think of much else tbh. If I play Zelda, it has to be randomized at least.

Marble Madness

Ninja Gaiden

Ninja Gaiden II

Ninja Gaiden III

Tetris

Palamedes

Batman the Video Game

Contra

Mike Tyson's Punch-Out

Super Mario Bros.

My most played NES game these days is Marble Madness. My pb is 179,400 which is higher than the official world record. (This required getting a second stage wand, breaking the black marble in the second stage, and beating the game with 78 seconds left on the clock.)

I could say somehting generic like Mega man, Mario Brothers, Pac Man or Galaga, but my actually favorite game for the NES is called Spam Spaß. It's a hidden gem. In that game you're some random youtube dude who makes trashy videos and spams them on forums, and don't even bother to come back to read the generic threads you opened up. Might seem like a boring game to you guys, but I bet some people actually enjoy it as much as I do.

Now besides that game, I like the following games:

Pac Man, Mario 2 (usa) and Mario 3, Mario Brothers (the arcade game), Xevious, tetris, rolling Thunder, Bubble Bobble.

I don't know the NES library very well. I grew up with this system, played things like Mega mand and Contra do death, but to be honest I am really tired of this kind of memorization chore. These games feel stiff to me. I do want to learn more about the library. There are actually many games that seem interesting and I'd like to learn. I do enjoy the more oldschool arcade-like experience, and I do think the NES has that to offer. I remember loving Salamander, but I remember it being so insanely hard i'd rarely finish the very first level. I gueyy I'd do better nowadays. Gotta get my hands on some of those and try them out.

IMO, games like Ninja Gaiden and Contra have a reflex sweet spot, where youve played the game often enough that youre good, but not so much that youve memorized every pixel and every twitch. Once you get to that latter stage, the game is mechanical and just not as much fun. The key is to keep your experience in the zone where you recognize patterns, but the overall experience still feels spontaneous.

Also, you can try more challenges to keep these games interesting. Once you can beat Ninja Gaiden, try to beat it without a game over, or without dying, or with a much faster time, or with only the sword, or pacifist. Or try to beat Contra with just the pea shooter or laser.
