UnoCart-2600 : a DIY SD multi-cart for the 2600

In the early 80s/90s, I ran The Santiarium BBS/The Amiga Archives in the 916 area...

The Bates Motel BBS sounded super familiar, so I looked it up to see if it was the same one. I'm fairly certain it is.

In the early 2000s I put The Sanitarium back up as a telnet BBS on Sparc 5 for a while. It was cool at first, lots of nostalgia and most of the old crowd showed up for a while. But it is rough competing with Facebook. :)

That is awesome! Yap, I used to run the Motel for a looong time. I started on a 130XE with 10MB of storage! Woot! Then I shifted to WIldcat! on DOS. Oh, those were the days. I just recently had to shut it down for a bit. Either there is a problem with the modem or someone is trying to do a DDOS with the BBS. Someone/something is connecting, waiting 28 seconds (30 seconds is the time out limit), hitting a key, repeat. Quite annoying.

I really need to get me any multi carts out there so far I dont have any at all:(

You really have two options the unocart or harmony. Two different price points. I was thinking of the uno myself. Unlike other systems like the nes which have multiple of options.

I was in the same dilemma but as i only intend to play the original range of games on my 2600 i settled on the UNO.

The Harmony (with its extra hardware) is appropriate for original games and the newer home-brew,

I have no need of the extra hardware so the UNO is fine for my need also the price point fits me too.

Draconian

Space Rocks

Anguna

Dungeon II

Panky the Panda

Zippy

Mappy

Runs

When I say "Runs," I found a file and it loads and appears to play. If the sounds are not correct, I would not know unless it was obvious (and it wasn't to me). Also, I am going off of memory from when I tested a few days ago. Finally, these files were 1-10 years old that I found, so maybe there was a later version that I did not see and/or it went commercial and so was not legally available or download.

If you have legal files that you can share so I can test them, I am happy to do so.

Also, Stay Frosty works, Stay Frosty 2 does not.

I just received an email from somebody who's not yet a member of AtariAge (he's having trouble logging in for some reason, and found me via my website). He's asking me why Space Rocks doesn't run. Based on this, I gather he needs a firmware update. Has it been released, or are y'all still working on it?

Thanks!

There currently is no firmware for the UnoCard that supports DPC+ or CDF.

That's basically what it comes down to.

Want to play only the official games and many homebrews as a bonus, and want to spend less money? Get the UNO Cart.

Want to play more recent homebrews and don't mind spending more? Get the Harmony Cart

I've got my money on 256k ROM games the Encore cart supports working on the Uno in the future. So, you can't go wrong with one or the other. Or, both :)

Didn't you get it running with some patching? Or was that a different game?

Almost correct ;) What I tried and got working was running unmodified DPC+ games on the UnoCard memory layout in emulation (6502.ts) by patching them. However, I haven't tried the same thing on the Uno yet. Maybe later this year, after documenting Stella's TIA emulation and a myard of other stuff that I'd like to do :P

There is no reason why it shouldn't work --- the mod doesn't interfere with the Uno in any way.

Hmm it works fine on my 2600 Jr which isn't modded but my six switch which has the etim 2600RGB mod it doesn't even load the menu. The six switch works fine with normal cartridges any thoughts on where to start debugging?

Sorry, I should've paid more attention and read more carefully --- I though you were talking about a simple composite or S-Video mod, but I guess you are talking about this. That is a pretty invasive piece of electronics. My best guess is that the power supply cannot provide enough power to the 2600, the mod and UnoCard together. Apart from trying a more capable power supply, there's not much that I can suggest. Another possibility is additional noise on the bus generated by the mod or the switching power module.

Do you have a Harmony cart? Does it work with the modded console?

ZeroPageHomebrew streams on Twitch with an RGB modded six switcher.

He reported UnoCart-2600 did not work until he soldered a jumper across an inductor — a part dropped from the design during the early six switch days.

A jumper across this part adds compatibility with a couple original game carts such as River Raid II along with some modern home-brew (Stay Frosty 2, Reindeer Rescue).

If your Uno works on an Atari Jr. this is possibly why it’s failing for you.

The jumper pictures are here:

No, sadly the UnoCart didn't work any better after that solder, it still gives a blank screen when trying use the UnoCart with my light sixer.

I was hoping that a side effect of the solder would also fix the trouble with the UnoCart but it only fixed the advertised issues with Stay Frosty 2 and Toyshop Trouble.

My UnoCart works perfectly in my four switch and Atari Jr. so there's some sort of incompatibility with my light-sixer that doesn't manifest itself with any cart I throw at it or the Harmony Encore.

So turns out it was something to do with the 3D printed case from TBA I removed it from the case and inserted it directly and it works fine now. I am guessing that the cartridge slot difference in the Jr and the six switcher is the reason it might not have been getting complete contact and thus the cart not working

I was so excited when I saw your post! Sadly it didn't work when I tried it this morning. I positioned the bare board in 30 different ways but it still came up with a blank screen and no detected video signal on my RGB modded light-sixer. :-(

So happy that you got yours working, still more investigation to be done with my incompatibility!

UPDATE: My UnoCart NOW WORKS in my RGB modded-light sixer! It was suggested to me by iesposta to clean my cartridge pin contacts inside my console and it WORKED.

It was the last thing in the world I thought it could be because every single other cart in my collection worked except for the UnoCart. So if people are having trouble getting it to work, here's another possible solution! :-)

SHAME

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9bGDOkhPTc

Changing only the title and the author's name was the worst thing I've ever seen. And if I understood, the guy is saying that he did the project. Really shame!

Can you clarify what you mean?

Your linked video is in another language.

The UNO cart is based on an open source design that anyone can make/build, or am I wrong about that?

Yes, unocart is open source for sure, but the guy is claming he made the project (as if he were the author). Look the cartridge name as multicart SD and the "author" as Dablio Games

Maybe someone who understand spanish can confirm

Oh, okay. I initially misunderstood and thought you were shaming UNO cart for ripoff.

The YouTube is in Portuguese and links to a hardware seller.

So that website that claims they make Harmony and Uno carts?

Possibly a seller from Brazil? (Domain is in Mali, Africa.)

Brazil has always illegally copied Atari hardware going back to the 1980’s.

Yes that is not nice, but realistically I think it would be impossible to shut down something like that.

Sorry, when I re-read my post, it's look like I was talking about the Uno itself, sorry for that. :(

But yes, I guess it's not possible to shutdown, but my outrage was on behalf of Electrotrain that worked several months to bring something FREE for us and some random guy take his work and make profit just changing the author's name. :( :( :(
