Revenge of the Mutant Camels

I've never had the opportunity to play any Jeff Minter games other than what has been available on the Jaguar already, Defender 2000 and Tempest 2000, both of which were my #1 & 2 rated games respectively. Needless to say I find his games to be everything I want from a video game, which is an assault of visual and aural potpourri, complete madness designed to overwhelm the senses. I don't even care if I'm all that good comparatively, I can hold my own but cannot master these games. I don't care, its completely fun.

I couldn't pass up the chance to buy a couple of more of his games when I found out this was coming to the Jaguar. I have been playing around with Llamatron and ROTMC for hours and hours this weekend. In fact, I can honestly say that I'm quite addicted to Revenge already. Once again, I am treated to something completely unique in my gaming experience, and something quite special.

The first game I played I honestly did not know what the hell was going on. I'm the biggest shmup fan, but did not immediately recognize this game for a shmup, but that's what it is, and a damn good one. It throws so much weird crap at you, I thought the game was just some big inside joke that I wasn't in on, but after a few more tries it started not only to make me laugh at how clever it all is (it literally rains cats and dogs), but also to recognize that hey, there's some strategic gameplay here as well.

The whole experience gets kinda hypnotic if you get in a good zone with the scoring and see all those 3000 points just rack up up up, mixed with the primitive sound effects. You can also recognize elements that inspired his future offerings present in T2K and D2K. For instance obviously the droid modes which are optional, but also the strobe effects, and even the main weapon shot reminds me of the main shot of your ship in T2K with the pellet style bullets. Add on top of that if you care to notice the backgrounds, you can see Gameboys, LYNX's and some game controller I have yet to figure out what it is yet (a little help?)

Whatever, it's just a blast. I just scored 5.2 million and defeating the Pac-Man wave before I decided to take a break and write this thread. Not sure if that's good, but I'm looking forward to making it further and seeing what other crazy stuff is awaiting me.

I know that these Jeff Minter classics are from the 1980's predating our beloved Jaguar by alot, but I cannot think of a better home for them to land than our favorite Cat. They look great and play even better. This is a no-brainer to buy from the AA store. All 3 recent releases are outstanding, I've played them all and they are all good. If you have to settle for just one though, I would recommend Jeff Minter Classics hands down. It's a perfect fit on the Jaguar. I do especially like the clever double sided box and double sided manual provided. Very nice. Really impressed with the manuals now too, dare I say better than original now, with a high gloss cover and full color pages. Incredible product by AA.

If you have the chance get Space Giraffe on Xbox 360 live. Its one of my favourite minter games.

It's on Steam also, along with Gridrunner Revolution if you don't have a 360. There were also some free downloads of incomplete Android ports of some of his iOS games, but I'm having a hell of a time finding them right now.

This post would make for a good review. You can submit it on the game's product page: https://atariage.com/store/index.php?l=product_detail&p=1109

Well thanks but I think I would need to add in remarks for Llamatron first. I started this thread to spark discussion of Revenge, but even I got off track with that in the OP. I'll think about doing something on the entire cartridge for the AA store.

it's here and includes

Super Ox Wars

Five a Day

Caverns of Minos

GoatUp

Gridrunner

... all for free. I think Gridrunner holds up best, and runs on just about anything, nothing fancy required. Gridrunner++ for PC is on that page, too.

Gridrunner on Android made my train rides for a while. Nice little addictive game. Plays great once you get used to the handling via touchscreen and the powerup system is really great. Had a lot of fun with it.

Oh and as someone else said above Space Griaffe. But that one is either hate or love it seems. :-)
