Still amazing no matter how you look at it. Until recently I was ignorant to the fact he wasn't the first to play a perfect pacman and I assume most other people are\where as well. If anything just cause it wasn't just him saying he did the first perfect game, the company said so as well never giving wide spread credit to the couple of guys that did so before him. Originally he probably did think he was the first to do a perfect game. Afterward though? Ya, not so much. Like I mentioned before, it's hard not to be the best after you have been the best. Any given average play, of any game they are skilled at, would likely beat like 90% of everyone else's all time best game. Just like Lance Armstrong, whom even without drugs, would still beat 90% of the world's cyclists in a race. In reality, nothing can really ever take that away from them. (it's not bragging if you can back it up) Now, the area that they got into trouble with was, take a wild guess, GREED. The same thing that happens to faceless corporations, tax cheats, gamblers, etc. It always does them in. They can't just leave well enough alone & be happy with what they have. No. They want more. And so they fly to close to the sun, and their wings get burned. King of Kong was just a movie. And like any other movie, "documentary" or not, they take liberties. They have to over emphasize this & exaggerate that. They create drama in order to enhance the entertainment value. So we shouldn't have taken too much from it, as a good or bad reflection of the personalities shown there. Billy Mitchell & Todd Rodgers are just human beings. I've met them both, multiple times at the yearly Freeplay Florida shows, and have had extensive conversations with them. (moreso with Mitchell) I've seen them play games. No doubt they have super skills well beyond me and most of us here. And they deserve credit for that. And guess what, they got it. And they've had it & enjoyed it for many years now. So wether or not it's all coming to an end, or wether or not they are able to put a spin on it all & recover, is unknown at this time. But even if they never bounce back, so what? Please no one take this as trying to reopen the can of worms here, just curious. You say its possible to get a 5.51 if you start in 2nd gear - is that confirmed? I think its also been proven that you cant start in 2nd gear correct? I only ask cause Todd has been saying the 2nd gear start thing since before 2000. There are a couple of things with that question. If the race were to play out exactly as normal - ie you don't gain any distance until countdown hits 0 - then yes, 5.51 is the theoretical limit with perfect play, and assuming you are in motion (not clutched) on frame 1. If you assume that on the very first frame you clutch into 2nd, as Todd describes, then at best 5.54 is possible. However, the game wouldn't operate that way for this reason. If you somehow manage to be in gear during the countdown and you have some amount of tachometer, you will gain distance. Even if you were only able to achieve this state in 1st gear, times of 4.xx would be possible. 5.51 would be a pretty bad time with this level of exploit. If you had some means to achieve it for subsequent gears without triggering the early start, I think I calculated that something like 2.xx is possible. In a recent interview, Billy referred to the people questioning His Highness' high scores as the "lonely losers club", and continues to bold-faced lie about his scores not being MAME generated. Even if it turns out everyone was horribly mistaken, what kind of grown man and supposed ambassador for video games calls people names like that? A cheater, a liar, and a poor sportsman - he can just fuck right off. This is most obvious from the first few points of the match where it curiously starts in 2nd without going to Neutral, then proceeds to shift twice while staying in 2nd... You can tell when a shift occurs by watching the jumps in the tachometer. The number of frames the game is in second 5 (17) also matches with a 5.57. They are already flooding the web and this will increase massively. We are at the point where educating people to use their brain is way more efficient. Different skill sets limit what each individual can prove/disprove. Different starting assumptions based on a person's experienced create different standards of proof or interpretations of data.
