TonVH
I want to get to the ROM chips. However opening the inside cover (radiation prevention?) is problematic. It seems to be in one part and running behind the power input & on/off switch. Does that mean I will also have to remove the complete power supply. Or is there a better way. I've watched several movies but most of them start at the moment that all is opened up and skip this part.
KLund1
The PSU, switch, plug, are all one unit. The whole PSU should wiggle out after you remove the 2 screws facing front. It takes bit of working back and forth. The back 2 legs have little notches facing downward into groves in the Motherboard. With a bit or work it should come out. Be careful of the short cable from PSU to MB, right front PSU But not all TOS Roms are under the PSU. Most are under the RF shielding closer to the front of the case, on the same side as the PSU. But a few are on the far right. There are many ST models, and then there are a few MB versions of each model with different IC layouts. Then you get to see if they are socketed or soldering in. Good luck!
TonVH
Thanks for the help. Now I have 2 questions: 1. I want to upgrade the ROM. Important restriction is that I do not want to do any soldering! I've tried soldering years ago and it ended in a ruined motherboard. So, absolutely no soldering for me. 2. What is best for me? Replacing with 1.62 or with 2.06. I saw both can be bought at the Exxosshop. (but information there is not clear. I have enclosed a picture of the system. (I can post a more detailed picture)
Zogging Hell
You have an STFM, from the look of the motherboard, so the most you can do easily without soldering is fit TOS 1.04 (1.62 is pretty much the same anyway, but with added stuff for the STe). There were some Analogic TOS upgrades that offered solder free 2.06 upgrades for the STFM, but they are now pretty hard to find. Exxos's 2.06 upgrades look like they are for the STe only as far as I can tell from a quick look. If you have 1.0 or 1.02 in there then you could get the 1.02/ 1.04 switcher on there or just replace the ROMs already in there with 2 chip 1.04s. TonVH
I guess hen I will update to 1.04 because I really do not want to do any soldering. If I am correct then Exxosshop has these on sale. Edited January 30, 2018 by TonVH
KLund1
TOS 1.04 is about as high as you can go without any soldering. I would suggest a few other maintenance items since you have the cover off. Reseat all socketed IC's. pull them out completely and reseat. Clean the heads on the FD. Maybe clean the FD eject button. General dusting inside. Perhaps give the top case a good washing.
