It looks like Atari is planning on creating its own cryptocurrency. I'm surprised and yet not very fond of it... though still surprised.

Isn't that for in-game purchasing and slot machine or other gambling mechanisms?

Yup for all of the above mostly aiming towards gambling. Honestly, I'm not too fond of it as I felt they were just trying to get into this cryptocurrency hype. It's sad enough for the crypto miners to cause hurt within PC gamers and PC builders. I for once had plans to build a PC gaming rig this year and so far I'm planning on just buying a pre-built PC.

And hype it is.. Bitcoin & crypto is like so fullashit. All it does is burn electricity and raise the price of gamers' hardware - like graphics cards. Like all last year GTX boards were retailing for 2x and 3x MSRP. And did anyone care to make life tolerable for gamers? So fuck'em all, now that the bottom has (and continues) to fall out, some of that hardware can be had for firesale prices today.
As a currency crypto is flawed and has zero real intrinsic value. It's like a complex digital pyramid scheme.
