SIO2USB... probably again!

I'm sure people have made this thread to death, but sifting through the countless threads all mentioning APE, or prosystem, or [miscellaneous homemade program here], I really couldn't figure anything out. I have a USB SIO2USB and I've also made a DIY SIO2USB, and with that I've been able to get my Atari 800 to boot using respeqt. I was wondering if there was a program that would allow me to connect the 810 disk drive DIRECTLY to my PC, bypassing the computer all together. I've tried ProSystem, but it doesn't seem to be able to recognize any of the devices on any COM port. HELP!!

Well, that's what I did with a 1050 to make .ATR images of all my old floppies, so it *IS* possible to do this with APE ProSystem. It's almost certainly some kind of driver issue or something to do with the chips used in the devices you have.

I thought those were two separate programs?

They are. APE is the Peripheral Emulator, ProSystem is the imaging system (10502PC). AtariMax's SIO2PC Universal Interface (RS232 and USB versions) are intelligent devices in that APE or ProSys configure the mode in which the device works: SIO-2-PC or 1050-2-PC. There are also dedicated 1050-2-PC interfaces out there, AtariMax just combined the two into one device (since they are basically identical).

Well then, since I only have an 810, would there really be any objective advantage in using a real SIO2USB instead of a DIY variant? If not, then what program do I use? Sorry, I'm still new to this. In theory, I could use either the real SIO2USB or the fake one to load up DOS2.0s, and then mount another disk image, and then duplicate it within the DOS menu, right?

What program do you use?

I don't think that I quite understand the desire to bypass the Atari computer in the copying process. Is there an advantage to a direct 810/1050 to PC connection that I am not understanding? I found using my XL as an interface between my real and virtual drives to be a fairly easy process.

ProSystem is also the name of a long-running open-source 7800 emulator, so I was simply differentiating one from the other. In any event, when you get a trial version of APE from Steve's site (or pay for a license) you also get ProSystem installed along with it.

ProSystem is capable of emulating the Atari host system and offers a number of options for copying disks, how it deals with bad sectors and copy protection stuff, etc.
