Re-surfacing the the TI99/4A's casing

Has anyone successfully painted an ugly beige taste-reduction model?

I have never seen a beige one repainted. I have seen a PEB that was painted in Ferrari red and it looked hot.

Of course if you wanted to you could get some brush limbs from outside, lay them on the 99/4a (cover all the exposed holes/vents first) and paint it Green, then reposition and then brown, you would have a nice Camo 99/4a. I have used this method to paint deer feeders, blinds, and gun stocks... works great...

You must start with a caustic and acid wash in succession. Followed shortly thereafter by submersion in near-boiling napalm.

Then the fire

But you have to make a YouTube video of it to get 1000's of likes. Sadly, useful videos can get hardly any feedback from viewers. But a TI destruction video.... (sigh).

In all truth, while I like to rag on the beige console, I have been looking for a beige model SPECIFICALLY because of what OX is describing. It is becoming increasingly difficult to keep the aluminum pristine. I have one super nice aluminum machine and 4 that are gouged up.

I dont know any way to restore the aluminum... I even went as far as taking a case to a machinist/fabricator to see if he could replicate the aluminun shell. It quickly became a *yes, it can be done... but you dont want to spend that kind of money* deal.

Whoops, did this thread cross over into the Intellivision forum somehow? 1 relevant response to 9... great start! :ponder:

And what's with all the beige hate?

My Bad. << CLICK HERE & BUY THIS >> Use micro-fiber rags. Using small circles gets the job done, but you'll probably want to go in long straight strokes at the end to finish the job for appearance. I'd use a clear coat afterwards to protect the finish.

BE WARNED, you'll probably lose the TI logo and writing on the aluminum, so if you want to replace it, printing out water-slide replacements and applying them BEFORE spraying the clear coat is advised.

Wondering which paint and what prep technique works best on the beige beast?

If the beige case is especially nicked up, a light sanding and rinse before sticking in the dishwasher is a good idea.

There are numerous paints that are designed to adhere to plastics. I've had great results and there are many different colors and textures to << choose from >>.

I bet with a little careful prep/masking ahead of time, one could even turn a beige model into a black and silver replica.

How about that stuff you spray on and can later peel off? Plastic Dip? Anyone played around with that?

Do the plastic paints you use actually adhere? Do they chip off easily? Interested in your experiences.

Yeah... remember, you are in the presence of people whose hands are so delicate they cannot handle the TI controllers. You will find little love for the beige console.

FWIW, I used Krylon on an Amiga 600 and it worked very well. I believe the texture survived, but was so long ago I cannot be certain. I think the problem will be finding a Krylon that actually matches the TI. I got lucky with the Amiga.

Yes, as long as you clean the item ahead of time the paint sticks quite well. As for it chipping off, I've never had it happen, but then again I don't go out of my way to bang stuff around. Right now I only have two TI-related things that are painted and they look the same now as when they were painted.

I want to match the blue text of the logo. The "COMPUTER 99/4A" blue part. Anything but beige.

Be VERY CAREFUL removing the aluminium trim. Sometimes it's held in place with double backed foam tape and the attempted removal can bend or destroy the trim.

I learned this the hard way back in '83 when I dropped something on my TI and dented it. Fortunately 1-800-TI-CARES was still around and I was able to obtain a piece of replacement trim. I discovered the difficulty in removing it at that time.

Has anybody tried the automotive brushed aluminum vinyl sheets? I just ordered enough to do eight consoles. Specs are .3mm (.012"), so it's thin enough for stretching around corners to hide edges, adhesive, but repositionable, and supposedly is UV resistant.

I'm going to try my hand and report back after I get it and lay out a step-by-step plan to see just how many tangs I can break off so the base metal won't attach to the black plastic  Normally I wouldn't entertain what amounts to shrink wrap or combat acetate as we used to call it (the kind you put around an ID or business card to protect it), but this seems workable. That's my due out to y'all.

EDIT: If it turns out to be more opaque than I think it is, I've done enough work with two other sellers to have all the TI writing redone to vinyl labels as well in same style/font. ::crosses fingers::
