Vectrex hardware maintenance

Mauro

Recommended Posts

- dusting and wipe downs of the plastic ever now and then

- think about getting it recapped if it hasn't been already

- think about getting the vector integrator caps replaced if they haven't already

- get some contact cleaner and die-electric grease to clean and protect the power/volume switch

That's pretty much it. Some people prefer to keep their vectrex on all the time and just plug it into a power strip they can turn on and off that way to prevent wear on the power/volume switch. I don't happen to be one of those people though...

Later down the line if you wish, you might look into getting one of Charles Tweedy's Buzz Off! kits. Simple mod installation to reroute the speaker to a new replacement audio amp that removes about 97% of the buzz from the system. Then if you really feel adventurous, get one Charles' VAT modifications. VAT stands for Vectrex Audio Tap and provides an audio line out with stereo plus a mixing input for use with an AVox+ or VecVox to allow for even cleaner audio output to external speakers or receiver.

If it looks good and plays well I would not bother recapping until it needs it.

Why take the risk of fiddling with it?

Just buy a recap kit and put it away and enjoy playing your Vectrex.

Get Vector Patrol for ir also ☺

I've checked the unit after a while, and it plays fine, so I won't go into recapping it. What I notice is a very evident crackling sound related to power/volume potentiometer movements, so I believe I should service it. Also there's a very very subtle flickering at times on the video output, but it looks well within ranges of normal operation. Any suggestion for power switch care?

Get a can of DeOxit F5 and spray inside the pot hole, then turn the shaft back and forth a couple dozen times and then inject some di-electric grease and turn back and forth again a few times. I just serviced my power/volume knob last night and it works like brand new. Watch the video above to see what I mean.

I'd hold off on recapping for as long as possible because if any traces get tore up, it's going to be a nightmare trying to repair them. Only do a recap if it really needs it. ;)
