maxdrive
Since robotron is one of the few games that benefit from the Atari 5200 controller. Would anyone do any other homebrews that use both controllers like finally get a Atari 5200 cloak and dagger, even smash tv or even karate champ. zylon
Perhaps a "fixed" Battlezone would be a nice choice?

darthkur
Crazy Climber would be awesome. It would be perfect with the stock controllers. Other good candidates would be: (along with the ones mentioned above) Krull Tutankham Rock Climber

+wongojack
Karate Champ could be cool. I'm not sure I've ever played a home adaptation of that game that I actually like.

+wongojack
Karate champ needs the dual joysticks to preform the moves correctly the home ports always fall flat Exactly, which is why it fits in this conversation about possible dual joystick homebrews on the 5200. I also like me some Black Widow, but some homebrew treatment on that would be nice. Varying difficulty levels and a different continue mode that isn't bound to how many credits you put in would be pretty sweet.
ave1
A nice little Vanguard mod would be really scratching my dual joystick itch
ledzep
Perhaps a "fixed" Battlezone would be a nice choice? To do that right you'd also need a "fixed" joystick, meaning at least one of them would need a fire button on top or in a trigger position. One of those 15-pin PC analog sticks would probably work right for that, then get a 2nd one and dual stick your way to glory. That is, once someone does a decent wireframe version of the game itself. Red Baron would be easy after that was dealt with.
adamchevy
I’d like to see a dual joystick mod for Asteroids. It would be a very similar feel to Robotron, just a bit more floaty and with the ability to teleport. Along this thought, why hasn’t minestorm ever been ported from the Vectrex. It’s open source and an amazing game. I would love to play this on the 5200 with a Trak Ball or dual Joysticks. I think I’m to young to have seen a Black Widow Cabinet in an arcade. This game looks excellent from the YouTube videos I could find of it. I would be extremely interested in seeing this game converted to the 5200. This would be exquisite to play with Masterplay clones and an Edladdin Super Twin 78. I think the pokey would make this sound great! I’ve heard that this is the first twin stick arcade game. I never saw it in the arcade either. I somehow discovered BW on my own through MAME emulation. It was also one of the few actual purchases that I made on the X360 gameroom because it is kinda hard to find on compilations and the twin stick analog X360 controller played it VERY well. Personally, I think the stock 5200 controller should be excellent at twin stick games - it could be the controller's perfect application. After all, those sticks and pots are rarely the thing that breaks (start button). I could have sworn that Robotron came out before BW in the arcade, but looking at KLOV reveals they released the same year, so I'm not sure. I know that most arcades got BW as a conversion for Gravitar, and it probably is the only twin-stick, color vector game. Definitely a hidden gem of the arcade, but it isn't perfect. There should be more of a scoring reward for starting at level 1 and playing forward. I've played the game in HSCs, and it is way to easy to just start at level 21 and score better than someone in 3 levels than an expert playing from the beginning who makes it to level 10+. Also, the fact that you can continue from those high levels by just adding more $$ kinda blows the HS table to 5h!+. A few tweaks as a homebrew (similar to the way difficulty on 5200 Defender was done) would be very welcome.

I think twin stick gaming is definitely heading in the right direction on these older consoles. Most of the younger gamers nowadays would naturally gravitate towards dual analog joysticks. For me they are some of the only reasons I come back to retro gaming. Recently I purchased a 7800 just to play Robotron 2084, and a 5200 mainly to play Space Dungeon. I am also interested in trying to master the infamous 5200 controllers on games like defender and Pac-Man.
