How many GATES can you make it through?

GATES is a new Starpath SuperCharger game for the Atari Flashback Portable! Download it here to play on a real Atari console or in Sella, or play GATES online in Javatari!

Contest Rules:

You must upload video proof, you can use windows+G to open the game recorder in Windows 10 when playing the game in Javatari or Stella. Filming off the real hardware is preferred if possible, and the soundtrek is enhanced. My entry above starts it off at 13 GATES.

GATES is my Atari 2600 entry into the 2018 annual BASIC 10 line Programming contest open to all vintage BASIC's and home computers! Check out all of the amazing entries this year and last including Defender, Millipede and Space Invader ports written in 10 lines of BASIC.

Man, I understand the purpose of this game, but it is almost impossible to play. The ship moves inconsistently and amazingly slow. I can get past one gate but then the ship moves too slowly to get into the next gate. maybe just a problem with Javatari?

It could be, Javatari can have a control lag on some systems, particularly if you have a lot of Windows open. Try it on Stella or the real hardware to see.

Also there is gravity and inertia you have to get the hang of, there's a lot of angle playing involved because you generally want to be using the diagonals to control the ship - check out the technique in the video.

Once you're able to make it through seven GATES you'll need to play more on the right side of the screen to stay alive.

Here are some examples of GATES gameplay strategies in Stella and Javatari:

Gameplay in both Atari emulator platforms is fun, but Javatari is harder and comparing to the first video you definitely need a real TIA to experience the drums soundtrack.

Hope to see someone play on the Atari Flashback Portable console too! :)

EDIT: Watching the vids together Javatari appears to run faster than Stella which could account for why it is harder.
