Looking for Some YouTube Channel Recommendations

Recommended Posts

The title of the forum post pretty much sums it up. I don't follow that many video game-related channels and I'm looking for some new ones. My favorites are Metal Jesus Rocks, as well as My Life in Gaming. Although I don't have a massive video game collection, I like seeing other people's game rooms, but I also love hearing about some obscure games, imports, old hardware, so the recommendations don't have to be limited to just collectors, but gaming in general. The only things I really hate on YouTube are people who try to include comedy bits in everything they do or furious editing. Maybe I'm in the minority, but those are really distracting to me. Thanks in advance!

I'm partial to vghchannel, which has been specializing in obscure early console and computer games from the '70s of late. REAL retrogaming. ;) :-D He seems to be almost completely unknown (most of his videos have fewer than 20 views!), which is as baffling as it is unjust. Highretrogamelord is another good one well, and with a more international scope (he's into the BBC Micro at the moment). Neither show off collections or even talk much (if all)--just gameplay, no bullshit.

I'm a big Doom fan too, and also subscribe to Icarusliv3s (Doom Mod Madness!) and TheV1perK1ller (perfect playthroughs of various WADs, namely insanely difficult ones).

Oh, I also really like Terry "Tezza" Stewart's channel detailing his impressive collection of vintage computers, as well as LGR. Villordsutch does very nice ZX81 overviews.

(My focus has been solidly on the computer side of things lately rather than consoles.)

MLiG, Game Sack, Jimmy Hapa's Import Gaming FTW, the 8 Bit Guy, LGR, and anything Jeremy Parish is attached to help fill at least some of my days. I also check out Game Dave, Classic Gaming Quarterly, Nostalgia Nerd, Rerez and probably a bunch more from time to time, as topics permit.

Yes! These are right up my alley, thanks a lot!

Immortal John Hancock is great if you're into seeing large game collections and there's also The Gaming Historian if you're into the backstory of the classics.

I also recommend Battle Of The Ports on Retro Core's channel which compairs different versions of arcade ports.

You must be a millennial icon_wink.gif

I am many things. Millennial might be one of them... maybe.

There are a lot of good recommendations in this thread. I'll add:

- StrafeFox: Does a series called Splash Wave. Super high quality stuff and he has a very unique style thanks to creating animations and 3D models himself.

- Stop Skeletons From Fighting: Lots of great review and retrospective-like content. Used to go by the Happy Video Game Nerd.

- SomeCallMeJohnny: Mostly reviews, many of which being of the retro sort but he also dips into a bit of modern as well, particularly with long standing franchises or indie releases.

- Cygnus Destroyer: Does a variety of retro reviews and has a couple of different series, one being the LJN Defender.

- Gggmanlives: Mostly first person shooter reviews. Covers a ton of classics (just go through his back catalog).

A few of us have channels as well. We typically link 'em in our sigs.

My go-to channels:

Metal Jesus Rocks: Knowledgeable dude (he's even on here!) and a vet of the industry (Used to work for Sierra). His "crew" is great as well, and they all bring their own vibe and knowledge to the table. He's the kind of guy I'd probably be friends with if he wasn't on the other side of the country. Seriously, he's into gaming, vinyl collecting, Metal, and playing music. I also do all that.

Game Sack: Good, straight-up videos on various topics, and the production quality is fantastic. They get goofy with some stuff, but I like that sort of thing, so whatever.

Game Chasers: When I want some comedy, along with some nostalgic feels, I hit these guys up. The early episodes were fun because it basically followed them hunting for stuff in the wild at the beginning of the "YouTube Gamer" era, and they found some unbelievable stuff. They can be juvenile, so if you can't handle that, you may want to look elsewhere.

Retro Core: I've never spoken to Mark (he's also on here!), but I love his videos. The Battle of the Ports videos are AWESOME. It's also cool to see the stuff he finds in Japan, where he resides. Very cool stuff.

The Gaming Historian: Pretty sure this guy belongs to the same academic fraternity for historians that I do (Pi Alpha Theta) and was an actual history teacher for a bit. I've got nothing but respect for that, and I can tell that he does his homework with his videos. If you want to know the history of gaming, he's your guy.

LGR: So much awesomeness. His Thrifts videos are always entertaining, as are the Tech Tales ones, and basically anything else he does. Mainly geared toward vintage PC stuff with a lot of old tech thrown in. I bet his house is completely constructed of old tower PC's and woodgrain paneling, and I mean that in the best way possible.

AVGN/Cinemassacre: I cannot leave these guys out. There are people who hate this channel, but I'm not one of them. He was among the first YouTubers I saw, when a buddy showed me some early episodes around 2005-06. There's less Nerd videos these days, but there's more content with his buddy Mike Matei, who does the bulk of the stuff these days, and he's good as well. The James and Mike Mondays shows are fun as well. Do they know every fact about every game ever? No, but that's ok with me. I don't agree with everything they say (especially about Zelda II and Castlevania II), but I dig the content.

Classic Game Room: While Mark has mostly packed up and left YouTube, there's still TONS of back content on there to check out and he's been doing gaming videos since around 2000. Don't forget CGR Undertow, which is still archived on there with lots of its own content.

Classic Gaming Quarterly: Another AtariAge member! Good stuff, and I like the videos on the respective launches of various classic consoles; those really bring me back.

Game Sack is probably my favorite. It's the only channel that I watch 100% of their videos. Metal Jesus is another I enjoy, although I probably only watch about half his content. I also enjoy AVGN/Cinemassacre. I've sort of moved on past enjoying the nerd stuff as much as I used to, but I really enjoy James' non-nerd related reviews. I also really enjoy the Honest Game Trailers on Smosh Games. I don't follow any of their other content, but I'll watch 100% of their honest trailer videos. Game Theory is also good, but like some of the others, I only watch when he covers a subject that I'm interested in, which is about 30% of the time. Dorkly has some good video game related jokes as well.
