SS Posted April 25, 2018 Share Posted April 25, 2018 I still wouldn't get bored without Atari but I'll just save the other things to do for my next "Atari pause" (of which I had at least two during the last $20 years). I hit the "pause" button from time to time as well. The 800XL was safely packed away for almost 5 years from about 2007-20012(ish) and for short periods at other times. I have sold off A LOT of the systems that I had acquired over the years due to space issues and/or losing interest in them. I would never consider selling the 800XL though; I will always have a love for this machine, evem if it is occasionally boxed up in the closet, and always end up coming back to it eventually. 2 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

(Selling off my Atari 8-bit stuff) I sure don't get time to fool with it (or even log on AtariAge) like I used to, but when I do, it's always great fun again. Plus, why the attention thing? Just go quietly into other hobbies. Could the fact that one requires attention mean that they're really not over their Atari obsession, after all?? HA HA! Disclaimer: I am talking about the A8 stuff, or 8-bit stuff, in general. You may see me sell off the 16-bit stuff (ST and Amiga stuff). I've had it for several years now, and just don't have time to fool with it. The fact is that when I do get some spare moments, it's never with ST/Amiga stuff - and always (or usually) with A8. AMenard Posted May 16, 2018 Share Posted May 16, 2018 Sometime you go too far, too fast also. That was my case last year. I went all in, with my retro-computing addiction. C64, Atari, TI99, Apple II, Amiga... My bi-polar disorder dind't help as I was in a "high". But was also burned by a few bad deal, especially the A2000 that turned out to be total junk and a C64/1702 deal that really wasn't as they looked as if they spent the last 30 years in a root cellar. I did rescue the 1702, but it still need a good recaping. The C64 was beyond hope. I ended up selling most of it, well what I had that worked, except for my trusty 130XE and a single 1050 for sentimental value. It was the first full computer setup that I bought myself, minus the 1027. I do intend to get back into the hobby but with more judgment and restreint on my part. The same for me, several "pauses" in my life for different reasons, and I bought and sold off many a system, usually when desperate for money rather than loss of interest (maybe short term), but I've always kept at least one 8-bit Atari. Nearly everything I ever sold off I've wanted back again, but some have become so expensive it will never happen. But If I ever leave the community due to lack of interest anymore, I'll just stop and you'd just never hear from me again. Only if I moved to a south pacific island without electricity or my stuff all burns to the ground in a fire and I just give up on replacing it all,would I bother saying good bye, because the interest is still there. He is selling, or he sold his a8 stuff. Although I recognize the emotions and sentiments, I'm wondering what the use is of this mud-throwing-party. I do not believe it will relieve any feelings, and I also do not believe it will turn people into the persons we would like them to change in. I remember I indeed have seen threads and topics where w1k did not win the prize for nicest AA-member, but on the other side, if that's a criterion... then we can start a 'tarring and feathering' thread with a rather long list (I will probably in that list too lol) with names who also did not win that trophy. My great grandmother already said: don't feed the troll (whoever that may be), which applies best here too. I don't know that it's a phenomenon but the simple answer is life and people simply change and the fact that the vast majority of us here are similarly aged makes it look like a phenomenon. I'm heading quickly to 50 and my priorities and goals have changed and a lot of it simply doesn't include this hobby and in fact I've sold off about 75% of collection since last fall. Once I was able to let go of my Tandy Coco collection the rest was easy to let go. I'm not out and I don't expect to ever get out but I've gone from looking at what remains as a collection to simply a corner of a room that has some old games from my youth that I enjoy playing from time to time. As such I post less here and other forums and I've decided to stop making videos altogether. I'll always enjoy this hobby, I've been doing it for too damn long but in my case I've simply decided to give it less priority in my life than in the past. And although addiction has a 'bad taste', I have extremely fond memories of that time. I wished I could fly back in time, and I would do it all over again. Serious. I'm still happy with my a8 stuff, although I'm less attached to it. Meanwhile I have created such a insanely huge 'spare' collection, that a few years ago it almost 'paralyzed' the way I could enjoy the hobby. I was seriously afraid that I would be 'without a working a8' some day... It needed some serious change haha. I did rent an external storage and 80% of what I currently have is stored there. In my house I have a few a8's and some equipment and books that is handy to have around or what I actually use. This action did increase my fun with at least 1000% ... less distraction, less worries. The only thing missing yet, is time and peace-in-mind to actually sit there and do some coding. There is always time for playing a game or too, but coding is a creative process that needs (endless) time. Which I don't have... pity. I also use my a8 for my business administration. This works excellent, and gives me still reasons to keep using a8! Besides all this, there is another story, which people might recognize. During many years I was looking for the ultimate atari 8bit setup. What would be the best setup for AND coding, AND enjoying all games/demos, AND running a BBS, and everything else, without instability, but with high speed storage. It took me 2 decades to search for the best, and alternating my setup. I was pretty much involved in hardware, do some cool solder jobs and all that stuff. But... the search-journey kept me going. It was fun! I did not realize this, until I found my ideal (stand alone!) setup. Once I found what I was looking for,... well you know how these things go, the fun decreased. A lot! My favorite setup is: Stock Atari 800xl (with +5v on PBI), A Turbo Freezer 2011 (which also gives me XE compatible 576KB XL), A IDE+ 2.0 harddrive interface, An ABBUC-RAF Sio2USB, an Atari 1050 with mini speedy, Atari 850 and a nice printer. This is actually doing everything I want/need. It is a fabulous setup, and yes I'm happy with it. I can code, debug, play, compose, write, work, game... it's all there. And it just works! Where I changed my setup before every 2 weeks or so, it hasn't been changed for the last 4 years now. Incredible eh? But strange enough, when my setup was less 'perfect'... it kept me writing tools for compensating what the setup did lack, or it kept me inventing other creative solutions for what my setup or my experience was missing. Lol. And with that insight, I realize that THAT was the biggest part of the atari 8bit hobby. Finding creative solutions. Perhaps I should do the journey all over again. I must say... I never had an Apple II when I was young and I never got any use for the IIe Platinum that I bought years ago. Since most of the software that I wanted to use on it also exist on the Atari and/or C64 (with better sound and graphics) anyway, I got rid of it. The Atari 8bit were the first computers that I really made use of beside gaming. I learn to program on it, mostly in Basic but still. The C64 was my goto gaming computer and I also loved listening to SID tunes. So both of those I still have a use for and for the exact same reason. I intend to code on the Atari and play on the C64. I could go the emulator's way, but frankly I don't see a point. I sit in front of a PC all day, I want something different when I'm home. I'm not really into "game collecting", I'll never be or more precisely don't want to be the next John Hancock. I don't have the space anyway and I never really played games on consoles beside the Coleco Gemini that I had with 3 games. I do intend to buy some of my favorite or those games that really need some special copy protection gizmut, but that's about it. Beside the prices are getting out of hand if you factor the exchange rate and shipping. Shipping especially, where you can buy a game on tape for $20 but they want to charge $40 for shipping...
