+slx
I bought a Rana 1000 off EBay on a whim and on receiving it heard something sliding around inside. This turned out to be as small silver disc that looks like it had been glued to the top of the drive motor (maybe with some adhesive film that's now yellowed and brittle on one side of the disc and a few traces of which are visible on the motor). Any idea what it's good for and if it is actually required for operation? BTW, is it normal for the MPI mechanism on the Rana to have to push/pull the drive "lever" to lock/unlock the door in the closed position? Guest
does that disc protect the top of the stepping motor from the inside of the case whenever you slide the lid off? or it may just be a label that the print has all faded? the push/pull mech is correct - in a lot of ways it's more reliable than levers - less moving parts to break thru wear n tear Edited May 3, 2018 by Guest
+slx
It doesn't look like it ever had printing on it. It's just a plain metallic-looking disc. Anyone with a Rana who can check theirs? does that disc protect the top of the stepping motor from the inside of the case whenever you slide the lid off? or it may just be a label that the print has all faded? the push/pull mech is correct - in a lot of ways it's more reliable than levers - less moving parts to break thru wear n tear
JR>
Just opened mine up and there is a silver metallic disc stuck on the top of the motor. Assume it is just there for protection and perhaps noise shielding. No writing or anything on it.
Guest
mine too. by the look of it, it's probably as my suggestion - protection from lid movement, and as also suggested - maybe some noise suppression. Edited May 3, 2018 by Guest
russg
Here's a pic of mine at the motor like yours. Uhm... can't seem to add a pic. keep trying. that disc in yours just looks like it came off the top of the motor. It doesn't do anything. +slx
Thanks to all of you for opening your Ranas for me!!!! This is truly a great community. So I‘ll stick it back on with double-sided tape or maybe even better a roll-on-tape type glue. Interestingly russg‘s drive has a small black disc while all others have silver ones. His drive‘s motor has a different shape with a ‚stepped‘ top. Gesendet von iPhone mit Tapatalk Edited May 4, 2018 by slx
1050
That's the commutator end for all those motors, there would be brushes inside making interference and according to the FCC you can't do that way back then. So the disc puts them in compliance mainly would be my guess. I doubt any TV viewers were affected in any case, prime time has been dead so long now it doesn't even stink anymore.
+slx
Re-glued the disc, drive works like a charm. I was always fond of the Indus GT, but this really looks even better next to an 800. Now off to another one that has a working display but doesn't boot. Unfortunately there's no troubleshooting guide in Paul Alharts repair guide.
Mclaneinc
Would that sliver of a disk actually stop any RF?
+slx
Would that sliver of a disk actually stop any RF? No idea, some said it might just protect the motor against touching the case. I had a perfectly fitting two-sided sticky tape so I just stuck it back on. Beats having to keep track of it separately anyway.
Mclaneinc
I suppose it all depends of the size of the rf generated, cables tend to have a fine foil to stop it but a motor should throw out loads..... Pass...Should have learnt more about electronics I only ran a branch of an electronics retail company and all that
