7800 on Retronauts

While at the Midwest Gaming Classic a couple weeks back, I sat down with the Retronauts crew to talk Atari. Part of that included joining a panel alongside Marty Goldberg about how Atari is unfairly blamed for the market crash in 82-83, but after that, my friend Brian and I talked specifically about the Atari 7800: its history and development, its challenges, and its games. The two segments were flip-flopped for the final podcast, but I think it's worth a listen!

Listening now, pretty good.

So far as NES vs 7800 arcade conversions....(though I agree with you on Galaga and Xevious) shoulda pointed out Joust. Where the NES version is pretty much broken trash, and the 7800 version is probably the best port of the arcade to home short of arcade emulation.

EDIT: Getting into it further, you do mention Joust, and exactly why it's better than the NES version. Still, always the NES vs.7800 comparison I think of.

I may shoot myself in the foot again here (now I'm 48 mins in) but no mention of using 2600 controllers as many 7800 games were one button? And the switches on the console?

I didn't get into the 2600 controller specifics, no - partially because it didn't spring to mind immediately, and then we ran out of time (and were all quite hungry and ready to wrap). It was a nice little feature in a fair few of the system's games for sure. I also tend to forget about the difficulty switches since their uses are fairly limited on the 7800 games.
