LidLikesIntellivision
I'm going to start a homebrew tournament in June. I'm open to suggestions, but here are my initial plans. 1) Eligible games: Homebrews that is or was available in cartridge and which rom is also available. 2) Game rounds: Monthly rounds. Starting in June and finishing in December with last game. Every round will have its own thread in the AtariAge Atari 2600 Forum or in the 2600 HSC section. 3) Game selection: I'm planning to choose the games we're gonna play. Probably next year I'd make a list of eligible games and pick them randomly. I'm not sure if it's better to announce every game from start or to make it a surprise. 4) Scoring: I like the simple 10 points for 1st place, 9 for second until 10th place and over get 1 point. For next year (with more rounds) I'm thinking to award 100 points for first place and then every other player get a percentage based upon his score. So if 1st player got 200 as his game score and you scored 50, 1st place will have 100 points for the round and you'll have 25 points since 50 is 25% of 200. I like the percentage score system because it incentives everyone to improve his score. 5) Prize: I'll give one homebrew from AA Store for the winner of the 2018 Homebrew Tournament. Fair or not I am eligible, so beat me if you can! It can be a homebrew, a hack or reproduction for the 2600 or for other platform. 6) Play fair: Don't use save states, don't hack or alter the program, don't use turbo controllers, don't exploit bugs etc. Edited May 22, 2018 by LidLikesIntellivision
karokoenig
I'm game. Gonna have to emulate most of it, since I have very few homebrews myself.
LidLikesIntellivision
And the games are just about to begin! Play, have fun and earn a homebrew from AA store by finishing at 1st place at the end of the 2018 Homebrew Tournament. Here are the rules and guidelines: 1) There will be 7 rounds. We're going to play 1 homebrew every month, starting June, 1st, and with the last round ending December, 31th. A whole month to each game. 2) You can get up to 70 points. Every round awards 10 points for 1st player, 9 pts for 2nd, 8 pts for 3rd, (...) , 1 point for the 10th player as well as 1 point for all other players. 3) Play and post how much you want. You're last and bigger score will be computed but you're encouraged to play and post your scores as you improve. It's more fun to see everyone's progress with the game. 4) How to post - proof of your score. Except if you're taking the first place with your new score, you're not required to post a pic or screenshot, just your score in the game's thread. Although you're encouraged to show your score with a nice screenshot or photo. 5) Play on real hardware or use an emulator. From the 6507 to the newest Supercomputer, choose a classic atari controller or grab your genesis gamepad. It's all up to you, just have fun and play fair: no turbo controllers, or any modification or function that give you unfair advantage over a real Atari - so even a pause by emulation or hardware is forbidden. 6) Only fresh scores. No previous score is allowed. You must achieve your score during the game's month. 7) Play fair. No cheats, no bug exploits, "point scumming" etc. You can discuss rules and solve problems by posting in this thread or sending me a PM.

Atarian7
What will be the cutoff time? Midnight the last day of June? Also, what level of difficulty do you want everyone to play at? Edited May 31, 2018 by Atarian7
LidLikesIntellivision
What will be the cutoff time? Midnight the last day of June? Also, what level of difficulty do you want everyone to play at? Yes. first Round ends at midnight of 31th of June. Super Cobra will be played at Standard difficult, you can continue after ending your lives since every time you continue your score starts again from zero. You can practice today, but round starts tomorrow. Edited May 31, 2018 by LidLikesIntellivision

LidLikesIntellivision
I decided to announce every game so everyone can practice before the round begins. It also will give more time for anyone who wants to order the cartridge. July Draconian This game seems to be an atari 7800 game, unbelievable we're playing it on the 2600. I can't wait to play it, I never played the arcade and I'm sure this will be a nice experience. August Star Castle Arcade Now we have Yars Revenge and Star Castle! Very fast and challenging game. I played a lot of yars revenge, now I finally will have the time to play this awesome homebrew. September Lady Bug Why all the buzz about pacman when we have this very beautiful and fun game. Actually, I'm not good and I don't like too much maze games. But this lady bug is so sexy I can't resist it. October Seaweed Assault Beautiful game and great sounds with non stop action. I hope I'm still good at the game. November Juno First Relentless non stop action! I always like to play it. December Stay Frosty 2 The best platform game for the 2600! I chose these games because they are incredible. I think many players will like them and I really want to play these games!
Dan Iacovelli
is the july game a 2600 or 7800 game? how about bonus points for those who also have scott williamsons star castle?are you still eligible to play what happens if you win the whole contest do you get the game? LidLikesIntellivision
is the july game a 2600 or 7800 game? how about bonus points for those who also have scott williamsons star castle? are you still eligible to play what happens if you win the whole contest do you get the game? In July we're going to play Draconian which is a 2600 game. It's so advanced it's hard to believe it's a 2600! Bonus points are generally a good idea, but I'm trying to make it easy for everyone to participate. So I avoid requiring players to spend much time playing more games and game variations. For Draconian, my first idea was to play two quadrants (two game variations) and then sum both scores for the final score to be ranked. But I'm not sure players want to play that much. I'm going to think about these options: more time required to fully participate with deeper experience vs. easy to participate with no big time commitment. Yes, it's a reason to celebrate victory buying myself a new homebrew. From the games of this tournament I only have Lady Bug, Juno First and Seaweed Assault. The last one arrived this week. I appreciate all ideas. I don't want to change rules in the middle of tournament but I'd love to have feedback and improve for future tournaments.
