After getting the SCART-Genie done and perusing the internet.  I came across JediMatt's project page on using the Geneve with a VGA monitor.

so I said what the hell, lets try it all Geneve users need options.  Also the SCART monitors are hard to come by.

This project was originally proved out by JediMatt42 HERE

I purchased myself a GBS8200 RGB to VGA converter HERE

JediMatt and myself emailed back an forth on this a while back and he answered quite a few of my questions.

Thanks to JediMatt's wiring diagram.  I was able to get mine up in running in no time on a breadboard.  I did change a couple of things such as:

  • use of a 8pin din socket as used on my SCART-Genie's
  • added a 470 ohm resistor to the Sync ouput line
  • added a 1k resistor to the audio line

otherwise it is exactly the same.  It looks very good on VGA.  With this you can only use external speakers or your monitor must have a line in for the speakers.

attached are some pictures and a concept design PCB image.  Not sure why my camera makes my 910mp text look off-white, but it looks good.  No shadowing.

I did find out that you want to make sure you have an adequate power supply for the GBS, it calls for 2.5 amp 5v.  If not you will get scrolling, blanking on the monitor and various other stuff.

i may modify the PCB design to act like a daughter board and just plug right on top of the GBS8200 unit.  Then the only wires that will have to be connected is the 5v and ground from the GBS8200 to the Genie.

i will not be supply the gbs8200.  Just the my interface board to it, assembled and tested.

i'm still trying to work out a way to make it a daughter board and be able to secure it on the GBS8200.  i'm thinking of using a standoff on the closest mount hole.

after some thinking i soldered up a new prototype board.  I was able to fit everything on a 1.5 x 1.75 inch board.

and I was able to make it a daughter board that plugs right into the GBS8200.

I was also able to secure it with the closes mount hole.

i'll be putting it in eagle soon and get some ordered.  i'm still thinking going with all SMD to allow for smaller boards (smaller = cheaper).

Plan on making a AVPC version and EVPC as well.

Put me down for one of the AVPC versions. Will the AVPC version have a DIN-6 connector rather than the DIN-8 required by the Geneve? If so, I already have a straight through cable for it. I just ordered a GBS8200 as well. I'll go ahead and work on a DIN-6 to DIN-8 cable just in case. Suggested power supply? Or will you tap the +5V from the AVPC?Thanks.

yes.  it will have a DIN 6

However, audio control will not be on that board.  you will need to provide your audio coming out of  your 99/4a as you currently already do.

For those of you looking for an external power supply, Chris says this one is perfect.

after some deliberation and perusing the internet for GBS8200 cases.  I came across COREi64's website HERE

I found his GBS8200 case he has made HERE

I am awaiting this very case to take precise measurements for the PCB that he has pictured in his photo on his site.  This way I can use the same dimensions for the EVPC version of this card.

I will be sending either a AVPC or Geneve version to COREi64 as he can modify his existing case to house the correct DIN connector.

So with that being said, i will not be designing the daughter board style, but one that will have solder pads for the wiring harness that comes with the GBS8200/8220 and header connectors if someone want's to uses a single row of headers to connect.

This way it can be housed all in one case and be nice and pretty.

Once I receive the sample unit to take precise measurements I will be reworking the boards designs and submitting a test run.

GBSVGA Genieve Model 9640.

I had some time while I am in California to work on the board design a bit more.

This is what I have for the 9640 version of the GBSVGA Genie 9640.

I am hoping to get the AVPC and EVPC versions done this week as well so I can get them all sent to the FAB for a test run.

I received the first batch of GBSVGA Genie boards for the 9640, AVPC and EVPC yesterday.

Today I put a board together for the 9640 and AVPC since I have both of those.

The 9640 is crystal clear, the only issue I had was my fault.  I actually reversed the 3.5mm phono jack.  Not the wiring, but the jack, so it's facing the wrong way.  I'll fix that on the next run of boards.

The AVPC version is another story.  I did get a few lines crossed so I had to cut a few traces and jumper those (one on top, 3 on bottom).  So now it works.  It's not as clear as the 9640 version.  I can see some vertical lines that I can adjust out with the monitor settings in combination with the GBS8200 menu settings.  I may need to add something to the circuit but not sure.  Maybe i'm just too stringent.

See the pics..
