TIPI Themed Case for Raspberry PI

Recommended Posts

Been working on a similarly themed case for my Raspberry Pi to go along with my TIPI/32K case.

Never expected to get as far as I did this weekend. Almost to the point where I'll try printing it. I've printed the back once (earlier on in the design), and the board fits nicely.

I have a cable channel built into the top of the case for routing the wires that go to the TIPI that leads out the back of the case. The cover has an opening for the I2C Pi OLED from Adafruit. I've also got plenty of venting designed into the case to keep things cool. To keep the case at a nice presentation position, as well as keeping the display within view, I've incorporated a stand as well.

The design isn't complete, but it's close. I have a bit more tinkering to do with the model before I print one off and see how it looks in the real world.

Here are some renders to look at.

The case with lid attached:

Mounted on the stand:

Finished the case and stand. It's seen MANY revisions to get to this point. Thanks to Omega for his assistance and critical eye spotting things that may have been overlooked as I shared my progress with him.

The ribs at the top of the lid are punched through to the inside to release heated air as it's drawn in from the bottom of the lid. The back is completely vented as well. Activity/Power lights that are surface mounted on the Pi are routed to the lid through the use of transparent filament. Works reasonably well.

Here are the final renders. Next will be to print the real world example. Photos of that will follow.

Thomas,

I have this strange feeling you'll be printing up an assortment of faceplates for this thing. I do NOT think it's going to stay contained within the TI-Community. I think every Tom, Dick and Harry who has a Rpi for "whatever reason" is going to want one of these. Quite frankly I think it's an innovative case and better than anything else I've seen for the Rpi. I hope you can protect your intellectual property and design. This is a winner!

Oh yeah, I think your printer is going into overtime mode sooner than later!

Thanks for the kind words....

You mean different face plates like this (sorry for the off topic images)...

This was a very time consuming design. I don't copyright anything I do, so obviously if people think they want to do it themselves, go for it. I've had people try to copy my designs before and so far they've been failures... There is more to simply designing a case, but thanks for the words of concern...

Anyways, doing this is my fun! Hope you guys are enjoying my work.

Here's a video of how using transparent filament to route light from the board to the surface of the case worked out. Found a spools of really clear filament, and that worked quite well.

There is some bleed because the two are not shielded, but you get the idea...

Ended up revising the stand as I didn't like how difficult it was to get the cables plugged in once assembled. Beefed up the design as well to make it a bit stronger.

Have a couple revisions to do on the case before it's done. Letting the LED light out is going to happen a different way, as the LED's between the Pi2 and Pi3 are located in different places between the two boards. Was fun to try with the transparent filament.
