Good fantasy role-playing games for Atari 800XL

I am looking for good games I can download and use on my 800XL. I am not an arcade person. For the Commodore, there were games like The Bards Tale, Wizardry, and the SSI Gold Box games. I know about Alternate Reality and Phantasie, but not how to get them. I dont have a physical drive to use disks, even if I could find any that still work. All I have, for now, is an SIO2PC-USB. The 800XL is stock, just 64k.

APE or AspeQt / RespeQt are the best programs for windows to drive your SIO2PC-USB.

ATR disk images and executables (commonly renamed to XEX nowadays) for most popular games are at atarimania, and other ftp archives like pigwa

RPG type games I can remember off the top of my head:

Temple of Apshai Trilogy

Ultima I, II, III, IV

Seven Cities of Gold

Autoduel

SSI, makers of Phantasie, had several others too, like Wizards Crown and the adventure/RGP Gemstone Warrior. You can look them up on Atarimania's search engine by publisher. SSI, Datasoft, Epyx, Origin, those are the main publishers that released RPG games in the U.S. for Atari, Electronic Arts did Seven Cities of Gold, they may also have a couple more RPG-like games as well, I don't recall. Avalon Hill's 'Microcomputer Games'® had some early RPG stuff like Telengard and other lesser-known, IIRC. Mostly anything upto about 85/86, after that, the U.S. market dried up and Atari missed out on The Bard's Tale and Advanced Dungeon's & Dragons and others from the late 80's that the C64 got. You have to move on to the ST in Atariland to get those RPG's.

I’ve downloaded Questron, Phantasie, and Phantasie II. Those should let me get a feel for how they play. Also, I don’t think I ever played them on the Commodore, so,they are new to me. Has anyone thought about porting the others over. I know the routines for video and sound would need re-written, but both are 6502s, so should be doable.

I myself messed with Questron for the first time last night. It's an RPG long forgotten about by me, even though I was aware of all the other SSI RPG titles. I wish I hadn't forgotten about it years ago, very Ultima like which is a good thing. Just a warning, I was trying to load it for 20 minutes trying different ATR's I found on the net of it, with no luck. Finally I discovered it's written in BASIC. So make sure you load it with BASIC on guys!

I'll second Wizard's Crown and it's sequel, Eternal Dagger. These are the series that inspired the famous SSI Gold Box games, which believe it or not, are dumbed down versions of the originals. If you like tactical RPG games, these are the best from the era.

Wow, I need to make a list. Thanks for the suggestions. Also, th3 tip on Questron is very good. I would have become very frustrated. I worked on the color setting today. They look good now. I am setting it up on a desk with an older Windows 10 computer. The TV I am using has VGA input, so I hope to,be able to switch back and forth to feed the Atari disk images. Once that is done I will be ready to play.

Well, here are some lists of available RPG's for the A8:

http://www.atarimania.com/pgelstsoft.awp?system=8&type=G&genre=4&step=25

http://www.atarimania.com/pgelstsoft.awp?system=8&type=G&genre=5&step=25

http://www.atarimania.com/pgelstsoft.awp?system=8&type=G&genre=6&step=25

Besides the many commercial RPG's, I always liked "A-Rogue" by Antic (and prefered it vs. Mastertronic's "Rogue"), "Dragon Quest 3.14" and "Kooky's Quest" (Antic) which are all PD and easily available. Personally I think "His Dark Majesty" is one of the best if not the best RPG that appeared for the A8.

His Dark Majesty is definitely a great game, but I'd classify it as a turn-based strategy war game, more than an RPG. Even if it has some RPG elements. Though this could be said of Wizards Crown and Eternal Dagger, All three sort of blur the lines between these genres.

If you're talking about the engine yes. If you're talking about the story then no, as the gold box were based on the pen & paper AD&D game.

The engine, as I was referencing the turn-based strategy aspect.

The gold box games just tapped the rich forgotten realms stories, took the engine from Wizard's Crown, simplified it, and the end result was one of the most popular PC RPG series ever.

But I find, as a strategy rpg, the originals were better games, even if they lacked the D&D stuff.

A few months ago, I was discussing the ideal of doing a Advance Dungeons and Dragons type game on the Atari 8-bit that is similar to Broderbound's Dark Heart of Uukrul or the SSI Gold AD&D series. Use an Atari Max 128K/1024K cartridge to handle the memory requirements. I was looking to make it more turned based where it prompts you each move during combat. I was trying to recruit some help because all that programming and data entry be tough for one person to handle.

Somethings I am trying to do with my next action adventure, Secretum Labyrinth Dark Castles is have more Fantasy Adventure elements seen in other games. Already have magic items, potions, armor system, and collecting currency to exchange for items.
