Falcon030 internal HD is dead, and I don't have system disks

HD is dead - go on with Compact Flash. That was in both meanings - your case, and generally.

Yes, you assuming it right. Need special SW for setup the drive/CF card - partitioning and autoboot driver install. In TOS ROM is not much hard disk related.

With that SW you even don't need floppy to perform setup of CF card. With hard disk - can do it with floppy. And important thing: get Sandisk card. Well, if your spare HD is very old, I would not waste time and risk data. No, they don't pay me to advertise them - that's most secure choice. Other brands can have reliability problems, especially with write. Falcon's IDE port is really old design, so no wonder that problems with new medias can occur.
