Good episode, will be interesting to see the final result. My thought early on was why not go multi-layer and have the large chips on either side to save space? The reason I asked about the board footprint has to do with the 3 different Mini-ITX alternative A8 boards that emerged in 2017 (yep there were no less than 3 of them, including my own 1088XEL). What I'm seeing so far in Ben Heck's design doesn't look to be much smaller, and I agree with Rybags on the idea of layering both the top and bottom, or perhaps doing a hybrid design with SMD where possible like on the compact 5200 project. I wonder if Ben is even aware of the existing projects? The Polish board that was created last year is using the same chip set as Ben's board, and is based on a reduced size 130XE (started out as a 65XE design). So my thinking is if his board isn't any smaller, then why go through all of this, and duplicate other's efforts. Being aimed at portabi!ity it would seem that you would want something much smaller instead. Just my 3 cents (there goes that darn inflation once again). And I find myself in full agreement with others on that PieMan crap. (Yeah I realize the point of the show is showing HIS hacks but even so... ) What is that other guy actually doing there ? What is the added value ? Nothing, zero. He looks to be completely bored. What is it with VLOGs that as soon as they become sponsored, they bring in a "side-kick" ?? Never mind...What I found extremely funny that Ben obviously never discovered the BUS in Eagle and draws 16 individual lines between each part for the adressbus and 8 for the databus..... I wouldn't count myself as an expert in Eagle, in fact, I was forced to learn it to develop AntiX but I watched a lot of (good) youtube videos how to do things and did even some old-fashioned reading of websites....and even I know how to do a bus on Eagle. Because when I started drawing the addresses lines, at the third one I thought: Wait a minute....do I really have to draw 16 individual lines ?? naahhh, can't be, there must be a smarter way Then again, maybe Ben does this on purpose to keep it simple for the viewers....no idea....O well...I still find his projects pretty cool, especially his Atari stuff. And het has almost all the A8 details correctly, which I like Oh uhmmmm, who else noticed how poorly soldered in the EPROM socket was.... it sat crooked... Apparently he is using some SMD and nesting that inside the larger chip footprints to reduce the overall size. When I took a screenshot and scaled it in my CAD program, I can see that he already has reduced the footprint substantially from a Mini-ITX. Mr.Atari (Sijmen) showed it to me as we met in 'Sandkrug' germany. I remember there was a SpongeBob movie playing on thr LCD Monitor. I couldn't find a picture of it however. Lots of others must have also, because now they are cycling through all of them. This year, deciding to focus on 2 large projects was a good idea, but the choice of a mini pinball and a super motorized glue gun lost my interest. So glad he is ending with the Atari 8-bit home computer! Too bad it's not a step-by-step.
