Several times now I have run into a bug in TI99Dir that is really frustrating using Windows 10

I select a group of files to delete in Classic99 like DSK4 or DSK8 or whatever and delete a few files.

TI99Dir then shows a empty folder and I can not click .. (two periods) that normally is there to backup a folder level even when 4 deep? (What happened to cause this?)

So I shut down TI99Dir and when start it up again it BEEPS and says CAN NOT READ THAT FOLDER????

Worse yet TI99Dir will not let me select that folder ever again EVER!!!!

I have to go to download TI99Dir from scratch and reload from scratch and select folders for it to work again?

What is going on with TI99Dir to do this?

I am pretty PO'd with windows 10 on my new laptop.

I am having similar problems.  I have checked security settings, I own the folders etc. but get strange permission problems.

As I have started loading some of my helper apps, I am seeing similar problems with any app that saves to non existing folders or files.

That is, the APP creates the file or folder in the act of saving the file it is creating.

I don't have this issue with my prior laptop, also windows 19, but upgraded from windows 8.

I run apps as ADMIN and still shits the bed.  I have been in IT for 30+ years.  I have been through Windows 3.1 , 3.11 (yuk), 95, 98, 2000, me (yuk). xp, vista (yuk), 7, 8 (yu) and now 10.  I mostly like it.

But this is driving me nuts.....

If you figure this out.... let us know.  I'll do the same.

That is why one of the first things i do to a new PC is see if i can get windows XP to install.

If not, i try installing windows 7. If that does not play nice, i stick on linux and run XP through a VM.

I had a linux flash back the other day.

Someone put in a change request for a piece of software.  It was CHN-777

When I was going through the requests,   I said to myself.... Who is running linux and why do the need read write execute?

We do not have any users running linux and just seeing 777 triggered that in my head.  LOL

I was a big XP and server 2000 fan.  But I don't think XP3 is practical these days.  Security issues etc.

Though with a VM, I guess you just use the same image every time you start it.  No worries then.

I still have a Win98 VM for some legacy stuff.  But haven't used it for a LONG iime now.  Did run V9T9 in it though!  I think this VM fell victim to DosBox.

Well the solution has been just do delete the TI99Dir and download and install to fix this.

I do not think it is a permissions issue, it seems to be a bug in TI99Dir that when it deletes a large of number of files or copy a large number of files it removes any way to get back

and refused to open that folder ever again.

Thus have to replace TI99Dir to fix this issue.

Hi Rxb,

I'm also using W10 and have never seen the problem you discribe.

To be able to dig into this problem:

What version of Ti99Dir are you using?

What is the path to your DSK4 or DSK8 folder?

How do you start Ti99Dir? What do you do to select that DSKx folder?

In the first message you said "a few files" in the last message you said "a large number of files", well ... what is it and how much is a large number of files in your case?

If Ti99Dir beeps that it can't read that folder, did you check (i.e. with good old explorer) of the folder really still exists?

And if it still exists ... what are the folders properties?

And what happens if you run Ti99Dir on your system with Windows8 or Windows7 or WindowsXP campatibility? (Just choose one, but I am not interested in W95/98 compatibility because Ti99Dir then uses different code which I want to remove some of these days).

And what happens if you don't delete all the files but leave a few files in the folder? Is the behaviour the same?

Do you only delete files or are there also subdirectories in that folder?

Fred ;-)

Hmm the latest one on the web 6.3a 20171101 on Windows 10

Yes Windows shows that files were deleted and the folder is empty.

It is just after i delete the 100 or so files it does not show the double periods .. to go back to the previous directory like from DSK4 to Classic99 director of all files.

This happens on any disk selected if I delete a huge number of files. So I close TIDir99 and restart but says the error I reported previously.

The folder properties in Windows show just a empty folder and no problems, I am forced to delete TIDir99 and reinstall it to fix the error, nothing else changed??

This only happens when I do the above otherwise TIDir99 works great, just reporting this bug.

Path is C:\Users\Rich\Documents    (Classi99 subdirectory selected)

Can you explain why when I select a huge number of files the .. (double peroids)  just disappear??????

Fred, I too have had the issue happen where after doing x number of disk images, it just locks out and will not open that directory again, this was in Windows XP on a Pentium 4 laptop. Haven't tried it for over a year though.

The double periods disappear because the source directory (that is the directory where you started to delete files) can not be read (and thus the upper directory is unkmown at that point).

After reinstalling (as you call it) Ti99Dir the only thing that changes is the Ti99Dir.ini file. I suppose that that file can give some clues on this matter.

There is a section with this information (copied from my laptop):

"; Some paths last used"

default_path_left=d:\Ti994w\dsk3\
default_path_right=d:\Ti994w\dsk3\

So ... if it happens again ... and you exit Ti99Dir what is mentioned here?

More questions:

Where is your Ti99Dir installed?

How do you start Ti99Dir? Double clicking the Ti99Dir.exe or do you use a shortcut.

If you use a shortcut: what is its properties:

Target:

Start in:

When the problem occurs is Ti99Dir frozen or is it still alive?

If Ti99Dir is not frozen, can you select another directory for that panel whre the double-dots disappeared (left or right side)?

(right-mouse click on caption and choose "select another directory" or menu file\select another directory)

As previously stated C:\Users\Documents\Classic99

Shortcut that points to C:\Users\Document\TIDir99 points to TIDir99

No does not freeze just the double periods disappear so you can not get out of that folder.

You can change to a different folder but NEVER back to that folder ever unless you reload a fresh copy of TIDir99

Mine is always  on the Right side.

I right click and select another directory but the problem is that folder is forever locked out of use with a error.

Okay ... I did what you did, only my name is Fred.

Copied Ti99Dir here: c:\Users\Fred\Documents\Ti99Dir\

Created a shortcut for Ti99Dir

Copied Classic99 here: c:\Users\Fred\Documents\classic99\

Created a Dsk8 here: c:\Users\Fred\Documents\classic99\Dsk8\

Configured Dsk8 in classic99

Started Ti99Dir with shortcut.

Selected another directory for left and right here: c:\Users\Fred\Documents\classic99\

Copied 200+ TI files into Dsk8

Reread DSK8 in Ti99Dir

Files showed up

Selected all files and delete them ... nothing wrong

Copied 200+ TI files into Dsk8

Started classic99

selected module TI99 workshop

Read files of Dsk8

Files showed up (max files =127)

Started Ti99Dir with shortcut (Classic99 still active)

Selected Dsk8

Selected all files (ctrl numpad +)

Deleted files ... nothing wrong

I used both keyboard shortcut and menu functions and got the some perfect result.

What happens if a directory is locked out and you reboot your computer without reinstalling Ti99Dir ... can you then select that directory?

Fred, as stated before, I haven't needed to use it for awhile, but I could not access the directory at all while the current ini file was present.

After deleting and reinstalling TI99Dir, at first, then deleteing or renaming the ini file, later, I could access the directory, at least till the next image,

but it would do the same soon, if I remember correctly. I would have to recreate the circumstances, as at that time till my Corcomp Micro expansion stopped working,

I was trying to copy disk to images.

Well as both of us have had the same thing happen I should note I was doing this for over 6 hours or up to 10 hours as I have been writing and compiling RXB 2018 everyday.

Could this be a Buffer or Stack issue? My Windows 10 PC has 6 Gig of RAM so doubt it is Windows 10. So could the TIDir99 be misbehaving with over run of buffer memory?

(Note I have 4 OS including 2 Windows 10, Windows 7 and Windows 8.1)

I know it is very common for any app to not do memory recovery correctly and crash.

Sounds like it might be tied to the INI file? Next time it happens, maybe capture the INI for Fred?

I can't see anything wrong in the ini file.

I can't find anything wrong in the program.

Ti99Dir just checks if it is a (image)file or a directory it is about to read.

It is a directory but I don't understand why it fails.

So I did a quick change ... the  code was allready there. When this problem occurs a also call GetLastError() and add this text to the error message.

Maybe this give some extra clues. So let me know the results.

Latest version is 6.4.a

(can't find how to add the zip file, so you have to get it from my website www.ti99-geek.nl)
