Hello everybody,

after I've been looking for a Turbo Freezer 2011 for my Ataris for quite a while now, I've decided to build some myself.
I have some experience with PCB design, but not with such complex layouts, but I hope I can do it.

Of course I also saw that others are looking for a freezer here and wanted to ask if someone else would be interested in one, without obligation, of course.

In the first step, I plan "only" to recreate the old design.
In the second step I wanted to implement a new design with a single board.

I am looking forward to many hints and comments.

So long

Sven

Cool. The turbo freezer is a amazing piece of hardware.

Did you see the 2016 remake, why not start from that one?

Let me know if you want a 2nd pair of eyes on the changes.

Hello,

You don't need to design the PCB's
The complete design files should be available.
Ask Hias.

Of course I know the other project, but I had the feeling that it wasn't finished.
You're right, I'll make contact.

I'd like to come back to your offer to take a look at it all when I've finished a first version.
Thank you very much!

Ask Hias.

I am already in contact with the original developers.
My goal is not a 1:1 copy, but a new design with only one board instead of two.

Hi Keneg,

Yes, if the price isn’t too bad.

Currently I think that I will land in the same price region as then, so about 60€.

Hello Sven,

As it so happens, I was the PCB designer of the 2006 design and contributed to the expansion of functions to the original Freezer.
Also, I assembled and tested the majority of PCB's.

If you want to only make one PCB, you have to "disappoint" 2 groups.
The old 400/800 (As we did in the past) and either the XL or XE.
We wanted to have both XL and XE versions, so the first design was XL and XE.
And considered the 400/800 users a too small group and the design would offer too many challenges.

The 2011 model was only one freezer, with an adapter design. (Not made by me)
2 different approaches to the same goal.

So I wish you success in your decission, with one advice: Find out what group you want to service and why.

I was under the impression it already worked on an Incognito.  2 Reasons I have the Incognito are to connect a Black Box and the Freezer.

currently I am only planning a verison for XL/XE, because these are the only computers I have here.

But thank you for your comments, if it's running I'll see what else works.

Best regards

Sven

Hi all,

short update:

The boards of the old version are ordered.
As soon as they arrive, I'll assemble and test them.

Best regards

Hello Sven,

As you must be aware, XL and XE have different expansion connections.
So you need more than one board type.

Also, there quite a number of inteseted people.
Hopefully you get the SMD parts mounted, they are a challenge.

i will probably solve the problem with the different ports with an adapter board, as with the Freezer 2011.

I am not worried about soldering SMD components, I have enough experience with them. For example, I'm also building expansion boards for the MiSTer.

Would be great if I could get back to you with any questions you might have.

So long

Sven

Hello Sven,

My attitude in life is that anyone can ask any question.
(As long as I can choose if I answer and there's mutual respect.)
If I can help out in any way, I will try to do so.
That's one of the positive things of a forum like this one.
