This symptom even happens through a composite mod. Bare RF or composite mod installed - same issue. The "yellow" can never be tuned to anything other than yellow green. The tan is never tan. It is a green tint. Etc. Tried on multiple TVs It is not an issue with adjusting the colorburst. I've tried that. What could be causing this? The color IC (AY-3-8915) a possible culprit? I didn't notice it at the time because the games and utils I was using didn't really show this that I noticed. But the owner sent me pics of armor battle on his TVs that was showing the water as being green and other odd colors on the game. I thought the mod might have been at fault until he too stated the same was happening on RF. My modded 2609 in a Sears case doesn't seem to do this so I don't believe the common composite AV mods are to blame. I believe Tempest was having this issue with a comp AV modded Intelly he has and was able to compare it with another non modded one that didn't do this. At the time we thought maybe something with the AV mod was goofin with the colors but apparently that isn't the case. Yeah if you figure out the fix, I'd be interested to know for sure. And I was wrong about Amour Battle, the water was pink in color on that Intelly I believe. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
JohnPCAE Posted August 1, 2018 Share Posted August 1, 2018 (edited) I would recommend first checking the RC filter downstream of the color chip's output: R9: 18k C33: 200pF These purposely introduce a roughly 210-degree phase shift of the color output. If either one is flaky all hues will be shifted incorrectly. After that, I would check the resistor ladder responsible for performing the D-A conversion: R1: 2.7k R14: 5.6k R10: 22k R11: 22k R3: 22k R10 and R11 are in parallel to create an effective 11k-ohm reisistance. On Inty II's this is often if not always a single 11k resistor, but on the 2609 it should still be two parallel 22k ones. I think the R-C filter above is by far the most likely culprit, though. intvnut Posted August 1, 2018 Share Posted August 1, 2018 I had a unit that, when it got hot, shifted everything toward cyan-green, and went back to normal after cooling off. Like JohnPCAE, I would suspect the resistor ladder and/or the filter cap as first suspects. Green is on the -Q axis, which suggests you might be getting some bleed through of the colorburst into the output as well. Perhaps clean the contacts on the underside of the AY-3-8915 as well, in case there's some dust bridging the clock onto an output. lathe26 had an Intellivoice that had this problem, pulling one of the hand-controller signals low. (That is, one of the signals that was intended for wireless hand controllers.) Difficulty: On the Intellivision 1, the solder-side of the main board is the hardest side to get to, requiring removing the entire blast shield--err, RF shield--not just the top. My motherboard is revision "U 7924" and where R9 is shown in the images I've found related to the "system changer" fix I have a 22K ohm resistor that tests to be 21.86K. I also tested the resistors in the resistor ladder and they all measured fine. I actually desoldered one end of each resistor I measured. Strange phenomenon I noticed (strange to me, anyway). I have several TVs with different flavors of tuners with different features. One of my TVs locks onto the RF signal of the Intellivision. But then I can tune the color in with the colorburst. It looks great! BUT... as soon as I reset the Intellivision the TV re-syncs to what it believes the colors should be. At least, I THINK this is whatr is happening. I can then tune in the color again with the colorburst and it looks great... reset the Intellivision and it looks terrible again but looks just the same on this TV as every time I reset the Intellivision - same hues no matter how the colorburst was tuned. Rinse and repeat. BUT I am unable to tune in the correct colors on any of my other TVs. None of the other TVs do the "lock-in" thing on the colors and I can never get the colors to be un-green enough. And, when I adjust colorburst too far on all of my other TVs (CRT, LCD, plasma, etc.) I just get black and white lines instead of color. And, on the one TV that "locks on" to the signal and allows me to tune the colors in with colorburst I am able to get correct colors. +KylJoy Posted August 3, 2018 Author Share Posted August 3, 2018 Well, I went ahead and desoldered the AY-3-8915 from an Intellivision II I have and tried it in the console having the issue since it already had a socketed AY-3-8915. What do you know - That was it! I went ahead and added a socket to the Intellivision II and tried the suspect IC in it and, yup, the issue followed the suspect IC. Problem resolved other than I am now awaiting arrival of a few AY-3-8915s from China via E-Pay. They will likely be here within a month or so. Thank to all for your help and suggestions.
