Covers

Why did we always want covers for our Atari equipment (800XL, disk drive, printers, etc.)? Don't get me wrong, I have covers for my equipment, always have had them. It just occurred to me as I placed the 800XL cover over my computer; why am I doing this? Do we cover our work station computers at work? No. Do we cover our $7K color printer at work at the end of the day. No. So, how did we get into the habit of covering our $100 home computers? Things that make you go hummmmm?

My take is that it was a habit formed in the typewriter age when less dust on slightly oily innards of mechanical typewriters was considered a good idea. In my father‘s office most office machinery (typewriters, desktop calculator, postal stamp machine, court duty stamp machine) was covered when not in use.

Same for sewing machine and ironing machine (laundry press?) at home.

I used to put a British tea towel over my 800.

Infrequently used gear still benefits from a cover, imho. Just wipe your finger over the top of a bookshelf, especially if it‘s a room with a bed, you certainly prefer that layer not to accumulate in your cartridge slot.
