Getting EA5 program from WIN 10 to TI-99

So I finally pulled the old beast out of mothballs. Found one dead memory card and one dead floppy drive, but it works otherwise.

 

I have it running with an RS232 connection to my Windows 10 machine.

 

When I get my new SAMS memory card I will be ready to run CAMEL99 Forth on real hardware for the second time in history (that I know of)

(Speccery ran the kernel on a FPGA machine some time back.)

 

So... what are my options to get binary software to the TI-99?

 

I don't have a floppy drive on the Wintel machine anymore :?

 

I can envision a program running on the 99 and sending data over the serial connection but haven't found anything like that yet for binary data.

Not sure I can make a program image from BASIC. (?)

So I have the HDX server running now and I see that it can operate at 9600 bps.

All I need is a program in the TI to handle the communication on that side... but that's my problem.

 

I need a 5.25" floppy disk with the program on it. :-)

 

Hopefully someone reading this will be able to help you out, you could probably hit up arcadeshopper too.

 

There is also the P-Box TIPI that does things without the need for programs on diskette, or even a disk drive or floppy controller!

Several ways to get files from your PC to your TI.

 

1.) Get a WiFI232 modem that uses the internet Telnet protocol. Upload files to a BBS like mine, or Tim's, or Chris's, and download them back to your system.

2.) Get a Lotharek HxC drive and place the files in an HFE image, then take that image on a SD card and plug into the Lotharek emulator for floppies on the TI side.

3.) Get a TIPI. Probably the most practical. Requires both the TIPI and a Raspberry PI, The PEBox version was just released and production rate is tied to Matt's (developer) time to build the cards. It will take some time to meet immediate demands.

4.) FC5025 device allowing you to plug a floppy drive into your PC. Probably the most complicated route.

5.) If you have a very old PC, there is TI99-PC by Ralph Nabet. Best with a MS-DOS machine.

 

Again, the TIPI route is probably the simplest of all once you get a handle on it if you want to run TI programs you have on a PC on a TI-99/4A.

38400 .. fred's clients have their own flow control

 

I have a write up on how to do this with a standard serial card and a straight through cable, you can load and run ea5 from hdxs now.. and copy files to local drives..

 

This is clearly linked in the FAQ pinned post in this forum. As is a lot of other interesting information including a section on how to copy files to your TI from your PC. :) If anything's missing there please let me know so I can add it.

 

I sell the modified serial cards (when I have them to modify, stock is hard to find at a reasonable price..) also I can convert your card if you aren't up to doing it yourself, it's not a hard solder job just takes desoldering the ROM from the rs232.. at arcadeshopper.com

TIPI is the easiest, hdxS with a standard serial card is the fastest as all you need is a rs232 port on your pc, a straight through cable and to follow instructions.

I ordered a magic FM disk. It sounded like it would run on my very stock 99.

 

I got the sense that I need the full HDX mod to use the PC server.

 

If there is another disk I should try with a regular serial card I will gladly pay for that too. Let me know what I owe by PM and include with my order please.

 

Is that possible?

Thanks for that complete rundown Beery.

 

I have my old DOS machine here with an FTP server on it so I could transfer files to the DOS PC, make floppies and then put then in the 99. LOL.

That's kind of fun!.

 

In the meantime I will try Xmodem and HyperTerminal and see what happens with MAGIC FM. (If I understand it correctly)

And probably eventually I will go with the high speed server concept via my WIN10 machine.

 

The journey continues...

So I got my old 99 running with help from Karsul (new SAMS card) and Arcadeshopper. (diskettes-a-plenty) Yeah! ;-)

 

I tried MFM and I can send files to the TI over Xmodem protocol, but when I send the EA5 program for CAMEL99 Forth it shows up on the disk as a data file not a program.

 

DV80 files transferred perfectly so I have Forth source code on the diskette, but no program with which to compile it. :mad:

 

What am I missing? :?

 

Also , where can I download the manual for MFM that is mentioned in the MFM-README file?

 

Appreciate any help. I have been waiting almost 2 years to put CAMEL99 Forth on real iron. :D
