Here is a bigger package with Tip-Converter 1.1.1, Tip Animator 2.9 (no double-buffering, min. 64k RAM), Tip-Animator 2xB (double-buffering, min. 128k RAM) and several other useful files. The old Tip-Converter was a little awkward, one had to convert every single frame by hand, not nice if one wants to convert dozens or hundreds of frames. With the newer Tip Converter version it is enough to make one or two test conversions (with a chosen palette and brightness setting, without saving) and if you are satisfied with the result start a batchfile-conversion that will convert hundreds of frames with just one click...

Here is what I do normally:

00) make sure that the animation or movie is either in GIF, MOV or AVI format. (If not, convert into one of these formats, using DIVX or XVID for movies is fine)

01) extract all frames as PNG or BMP with e.g. Irfan-View into your Tip-Animator / Tip-Converter folder

02) rename the frames to 0000.png, 0001.png, 0002.png, etc. (or 0000.bmp, 0001.bmp, 0002.bmp, etc.) with an automatic renamer program, e.g. Ant-Renamer

03) resize the frames to 160x100 pixels for a fullscreen A8 animation (or downsize to a smaller resolution e.g. 100x70 pixels and then create a black border / black frame around each frame, so that it has 160x100 pixels again) with e.g. Irfan-View or XnView

04) start the Tip-Converter and do a few test-conversions of some frames (without saving) to find a good palette, brightness, luminance, etc. (if all colour-palettes fail, use greyscale only)

05) when you found a good palette and brightness, start one of the batchfiles (e.g. if you want to use Laoo palette with brightness 2.0, start Laoo_20.bat)

06) when all PNG or BMP frames have been converted into TIP frames, start the TIP-Animator and convert the TIP frames into a TIP animation.

Hints:

a) If you extract frames from a movie you often end up with thousands of frames, since the Tip-Animator cannot handle so many frames and would never create an animation of them, try to use only every 2nd, 4th, 8th or 16th frame (advantage: the TIP animator may create a working animation then, dis-advantage: the animation might be much too fast or too flickery, even when slowing it down with some delay);

b) if there is a lot of frame-drawing in the animation (created with Tip-Animator 2.9), try Tip-Animator 2xB for a better result (does not always work, since the 2xB version requires more RAM)

c) if the animation is too fast, try slowing it down with some delay (e.g. delay5, delay7, delay9, etc.)

d) if the animation is much too slow, try downsizing the fullscreen 160x100 PNG/BMP frames to a lower size/resolution (e.g. use 100x70 pixels and then create a black border around each frame so it has 160x100 pixels again), this should give more speed

e) if the TIP-Animator cannot create a working animation, try moving more stuff into XRAM, by using V4-V9 and/or h96 or h80 (but the size of the animation dictionary is still limited to base RAM and may still create an error and thus a failure)...

Good luck!

THANK YOU!!! Heres some test animations i did from cinema4d > TipConv > Tipanimator.. exported as jpeg, ran jakub15.bat to rename and output as *.tip then ran tip animator

its a little dark.. any tips on how to get it lighter and more colors to the palettes.. also im going to be making a vbxe version (may in fact be the main version with a non vbxe version also being made.... )

is there a vbxe palette option? so we can use the expanded colour selection available with vbxe?

Also i am exporting them as 8bit 160x100 jpegs... should i use PNG or BMP for better results? Also with the vbxe question above.. how would i integrate these into a basic program... such as load one of these as the intro to a game and then user hits the space bar to continue on to the main menu....

Andreas...can you include your how to into a readme and include in your pack?

Oh, I wrote several (similar) "how to's" for Tip Animator / Tip Converter in the meanwhile, so which of them do you prefer - the one above (post #3) or one of the older ones... (attached here)... ?!?

what palette might make these brighter they are really dark.

Alas, only the greyscale palette does make them brighter. Other choices: Search for another (brighter) Dalek video or animation or if you really really want this video/animation, extract all frames and then use a GFX converter (e.g. Irfan View, XnView, etc.) to brighten all these frames. When done convert them again with Tip Converter...

Attached are two Dalek videos (downloaded from youtube) and the converted TIP animations, which do require 320k RAM. The longer animation uses 86 frames with visible resolution of 100x70 pixels in greyscales, whereas the shorter animation uses 51 frames with visible resolution of 100x70 pixels in OlivierP (PAL) palette.

Unpacked length of the longer TIP animation is 298kbytes (worked only with TipAnm29), the shorter TIP animation has a length of 228kbytes (also worked with TipAnm2xB); both animations could be packed quite good with Superpacker/Exomizer...

As always: Keep a distance of 2 or 3 meters from the screen when watching the TIP animations, due to their low resolution...

  • 2 weeks later...

Very good!!!

did u use cinema 4d to make the original frames?

do you have a copy of those models thats the dalek models ive been looking for ,, and that set =D if you have it.. please send.. and ill give u full credit in the game credits.

Errrm, if these questions are directed at me (not sure if they are), then sorry, as stated in post 10 above, I simply downloaded the videos from youtube (and also uploaded the smaller resolution youtube videos in post 10) and then converted these videos into TIP animations. I do not own Cinema 4D nor did I ever create any models, movies or animations myself on the PC or Atari. I am simply converting material I find on the internet (youtube, google, etc.) into A8 usable or playable stuff (GFX, SNDs, ANIs, etc.)...

The original Dalek videos are here: [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZCy58Rf05s]

and here: [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksXrvoV7-fc]

and you can find many more with the search string "Dalek" with youtube or google. You may ask one of the original authors then, how they did their animation or video...
