CX40Hero
ORIGINALLY POSTED ON THE UBUNTU FORUM (BY ME) Good evening, good morning & good afternoon!I have recently installed Ubuntu 18.04 for the first time and have started playing round with the system and installing the new softwareI require.VLC, Gimp, OpenShot, Ardour and Audacity all work perfectly fine on the first installation but for some unknown reason I cannot get Stella (Atari 2600 Emulator) to work?It looks like it installs fine but when I hit run following the download nothing happens, I have tried going into programs and the Stella button is there, but again, if I click on it I get a spinny wheel for a few seconds and then nothing……Does anyone know what is causing this issue?I love playing Atari 2600 and I have been running Stella in Windows fine for years….Please help!CX40
mr_me
From where did you get Stella. Is it the 64-bit version, assuming your os is 64-bit.
CX40Hero
From where did you get Stella. Is it the 64-bit version, assuming your os is 64-bit. I have tried from both the Ubuntu built in 'store' software finder, and the Stella link on the main AtariAge page, both with the same result
alex_79
Try starting it from a terminal, to see if you get some error message that can help identify the problem.
CX40Hero
Try starting it from a terminal, to see if you get some error message that can help identify the problem. Just under 50 minutes left at work then a quick drive home and I'll do just that! Will post back any findings ASAP

RevEng
Based on your error, I'm thinking this bug applies to your case. If that's right, there's a workaround linked near the top of that page.

RevEng
Yeah, it looks like when you installed stella, apt noticed your sdl2 wasn't the latest and updated to the buggy sdl2. Try re-running "sudo apt install libsdl2-2.0-0:i386=2.0.4+dfsg1-2ubuntu2". If stella works after that, you can hold the package from updating in the future with "sudo apt-mark hold libsdl2-2.0-0". (and when the bug gets fixed, unhold with "sudo apt-mark unhold libsdl2-2.0-0)

RevEng
it updated to the buggy sdl2 again, because you reinstalled stella. Notice this bit of output when you install stella...The following NEW packages will be installedstellaThe following packages will be upgraded:libsdl2-2.0-0Don't remove anything. You just need to leave stella installed, and re-install the older sdl2. Then try running stella.
CX40Hero
Okay, this is getting strange, I have Stella installed as you can see in the vid. I run sudo apt install libsdl2-2.0-0:i386=2.0.4+dfsg1-2ubuntu2 then Stella disappears! https://youtu.be/2U57PDGX6i0
RevEng
Ok, I see that is removed stella during the sdl2 downgrade. I didn't expect that, but downgrading packages isn't something I do every day. Try this... (you can skip the first step if you didn't try to install stella again, after the last attempt) sudo apt install libsdl2-2.0-0:i386=2.0.4+dfsg1-2ubuntu2 sudo apt-mark hold libsdl2-2.0-0 sudo apt-get install stella

CX40Hero
Thanks for all the help RevEng but I think this (ME) might be a bit of a lost cause!
RevEng
Ok, looks like the maintainer of the stella package has set a requirement that it can't be installed with any sdl2 version older than 2.0.7. So basically they've blocked the ability to work-around the issue. Your options would be to either a) wait for this bug to be fixed, b) force-install stella with the older sdl2 in place, or c) build from source. (probably a bit involved for someone new to Ubuntu) (b) is usually a very bad thing to do, but stella doesn't have anything that depends on it, so it's not really a big deal in this case. Let me know what you want to do. I understand if you've had your fill of trying to work around this.
