Video game Board game hybrids?

Besides the 3 games on the odyssey 2, does anyone know of any other games from the 70s-90s that were board game hybrids (besides the ones on the ORIGINAL magnavox odyssey)? I always thought it was such a neat concept and VCR board games seemed to be somewhat popular in the 80s so Im surprised it didnt catch on more and there werent more games like the ones on the odyssey 2.

 

It would be neat to see a modern homebrew like this, unless some have been made please enlighten me! Thanks :-)

Based on the book of the same name. Never read the book though, only ever saw and played the board game at the local game store.

 

One reason why they aren't so common is BECAUSE Video board games took off. It's was more intuitive back then and much easier to play a board game with only a guy screaming at you in games like KNIGHTMARE instead of having added interaction.

 

That being said KNIGHTMARE wasn't very good, but it sure was popular. I think in some places it was called ATMOSFEAR.

Not a board game, per se, but there is a PS1 (I think it was PS1) game that had a robot building aspect to it. You would build a robot out of parts that came in a kit, interchangeable torsos and legs and arms and such, then what you built would show up in game for you to fight with. Don't remember the name but have seen it in YouTube videos a few times.

 

Of course this is more going down the path to something like the Skylanders or Disney Infinity or Amiibos or whatever...

I think I've also seen some card games that use a camera to interface with a video game. Turn over cards, something like the playstaion eye toy sees them and then something happens in game... maybe like a single player Magic the Gathering or something... don't remember... something else I remember seeing on a YouTube video. Don't remember names, of course... I'm terrible at those...

If you don't mind buying a Kinect for the 360, I think there's a few board games on that that combine TV interaction with some cards.

 

Keep in mind that the original Kinect has detection issues and is generally not the most reliable piece of hardware.

With the popularity of hoard games today I'm kinda surprised there hasnt been any new attempts. I loved Nightmare and its expansions. And a friend from high school actually owned Lord of the Rings for the Odyssey. Never played it but all the packaging for it was amazing.

 

I guess with modern tech you really don't need any other equipment, even though it's cool. Anybody remember Dark Tower board game from Milton Bradley?

Yes I was just going to post about Dark Tower, that was an awesome board game with an ominous looking Dark Tower centerpiece; really well designed and tremendous fun to play!

 

I remember another contemporary board game, Dungeons and Dragons where the board was computerized and players moved the pieces around plotting out a maze to find treasure.

 

The Fidelity Chess Challenger series comes to mind as well.

Not sure if you explicitely are asking about console games, or would include computer games as well.

 

Robot Rascals for the Apple II, C64 and DOS is part card game, part computer.

 

Brian Clough's Football Fortunes for the Acorn BBC Micro and Electron, Amstrad CPC and PCW, Atari 8-bit and ST, Commodore 64, 16, Plus/4 and Amiga, MSX, ZX Spectrum and DOS is mainly a board game where the computer acts like the bank and possibly replaces event cards. I've got this in my collection but never tried to play it.

I loved Robot Rascals, I was going to post about it if nobody did. I'm not sure there are many games like it either.

You can't mention Dark Tower without mentioning some of the other games in Milton Bradley's short-lived electronic board game series - Stop Thief and Lost Treasure. Stop Thief is one of my favorites and I didn't discover it until a few years ago.
