I really don't know what to make of this game.  I mean is it for speed runners?  Platforming fans?  I don't want to be unfair to this game; I know resources and budgets were non existent at this point in Atari's history, but if I played this in 1990 the only way I like this is if I lived in a cave and had never seen a NES or Genesis.  The repetitive levels, design that makes you go fast and immediately punishes you for going fast, the drops that you don't know are there until you die because the graphical choices.

Anyone here see it different?  Am I missing something?  I was constantly running too fast and having to pump the brakes as baddies fell out of the sky into my path.  I played until I finished it, but I really had to MAKE myself finish it.

It kept reminding me of a game like I Wanna Be The Guy or some speed runner style game that someone with crazy skills could certainly attack with style, but for an average gamer this might be just too much.

Thoughts anyone?

The Lynx version was better. That's about all I can say on Scrapyard Dog. It tried and I give it that much but it failed to succeed in the efforts it was trying to accomplish IMO.

I have no idea how you beat this game.  I love the Lynx version as well, but I cannot bet very far in that version either.

My top 5 issues with Scrapyard Dog have already been nailed by you, gorfcadet:

1) ...design that makes you go fast and immediately punishes you for going fast...

2) ...design that makes you go fast and immediately punishes you for going fast...

3) ...design that makes you go fast and immediately punishes you for going fast...

4) ...the drops that you don't know are there until you die because the graphical choices...

5) ...repetitive levels...

86ing the birds, tires, and basketballs, or at least changing their (direct) attack, would be a step in the right direction.  The real slap in the face comes from the boss battle puzzle at the end as the reward, if a player can stomach through the game.

I've tried to play it entirely through and you're a better man than me, gorfcadet.  It annoys me too much to the point that no matter how much I (try to) motivate myself to play it through, it just sucks the motivation dry.

Even with the graphics and infinite lives hack applied by KevinMos3, it still is not enough for me to see the game through to completion:

It was work.  Let me tell ya.  I had to switch to emulation to get video grab for the review; my best was level 5-1 on real hardware.  On the emulator I was save stating like a maniac!  I just didn't want to hear someone who loves this game getting to me because I didn't play all the way through.  I played ALLLLLLL the way through, and I still hate it.  :)

What was that "final boss" all about?  yeeeeesh.

Best way I describe Scrapyard Dog, is it's just not fun. A real shame, because the basics are there. Just poorly executed and like everyone else has noticed, design is all wrong.

Why did you start another thread to post your video?  It belongs here with your description and reaction to the playthrough.

Apologies.  Didn't know how to retitle the original thread and to be honest, I just wasn't thinking.  A lot of screaming kids today.

Carrying on the tradition... you weren't thinking. Just like the developers and managers at Atari when they released Scrapyard Dog. Some things never change.
