PlayStation Classic (mini) is coming...............

Recommended Posts

I think it reflects a certain kind of fan ...if you were born before ~1980, this probably isn't your speed. I'm disinclined to get it based on this lineup, too.

I'd keep TEKKEN 3 (first time digitally available in North America), RR4, Rayman, Abe, and maybe Toshinden for a laugh. Then give me Xevious 3D+G, Tempest X, Soul Edge, Colony Wars, G-Police, Wipeout XL, Wipeout 3 Special Edition, Namco Museum 1-2-3, Parappa the Rapper, Destruction Derby 2, Jet Moto 2 Greatest Hits (which has #1's tracks on it) ...

Oh might as well just make it with all the NAMCO and Psygnosis games on it. Done.

What the hell is wrong with them? It's like they decided to just look into their list of games, removed anything with a licensing problem, and then hit this genius idea of let's from the worst of the best games as a list to go with. Meaning here they're good games, but they're bad choices, and definitely not representative of what quality things to look forward to in wanting to sink $100 into something like that.

Now I totally understand why they hid the other 15 titles for as long as they have. Of the other 15, sure you have MGS in there and that Intelligent Qube game, but seriously what the hell? They get good game makers on board, and then go strange. RE1 is nice, but why not the far more loved #2 or perhaps Mega Man Legends?? And with Capcom further, Puzzle Fighter but no SF fighter yet there's Toshinden?? And with a 20 game list it's puzzle heavy too. They got MGS ok, what about maybe something like Silent Hill or better yet Castlevania?

I just see a lot of B tier options of good games, but not much that makes you scream got to pay a benjamin for this. Where's like Tomb Raider, Crash or Spyro, Tomba, Medal of Honor, Omega Boost, a licensed FPS gem like Doom or something? This thing has just a lot of highly questionable gaps. The odd thing is, it's nothing terrible but just nothing oh my god remarkable either. Nintendo knocked it out twice with their choices, people then took their queue for the higher priced HD boxes and so far it has been more of a questionable flop or flounder with more Sega bungling, SNK moderately fouling up their mini MVS, and now this middling offering from Sony that smells of missed opportunity to one up Nintendo very easily.

Hopefully it's easily hakchi'd and has the space for someone to make a list that truly honors the little devices name properly 'Playstation Classic' as this doesn't. I was interested, now I'm saving $100. :\

The lack of RPGs beyond FF VII (which I can play on my PS4) makes this thing not for me. The Japanese version has Parasite Eve, Frontier SaGa, and two Arc the Lad games (which were ported by Working Designs, so I kind of get it with them being defunct). Dragon Quest VII and VIII would have been nice, too. Not to mention Lunar (two more WD localizations) or Suikoden.

Crash is missing because Activision is missing. Sony published those games on the PlayStation but Activision owns them now. Nothing from Activision on this, which I'm sure means that they couldn't reach an agreement. Nothing from EA, either, so no Medal of Honor. Just one Capcom title. Only one SqEnix title, too, and they have the rights to Tomb Raider. The lack of Tomb Raider is appalling.

Game list is up.

I think most of the rest of these were available individually on PSN for $5.99 each.

They are putting Battle Arena Toshinden on this thing after all, wacky!! It screams "launch title" and it will be fun to see people fuss about it.

That Persona game is probably something that collectors will want, if eBay prices for the disc are any indication.

Intelligent Qube wasn't released digitally in North America, nor was the Playstation version of the 2D Grand Theft Auto. There might be others.

It's a worthy list, not as solid as the NES Classic lineup, but good representation for all genres. I'd want more Psygnosis than DD, but they didn't ask me.

lol! is this where i preen about how some of my choices were on here? hehehehe (totally tongue-in-cheek)

that's an interesting list of games, but it seems really strange the choices they made. I'll wait for Hakchi3 with PS support ;)

Oh yeah I agree, I mean I get some of it. I was going to make a double post responding to the one above mine with Tomb Raider as Square-Enix has been the Eidos owner/publisher of goodies about a decade now. EA and Activision are out so that's fair enough which would strike down Crash too, but some I noted not because of it being viable just stuff people jump to when they think the original PS1. Spyro not sure who publishes that now, but that's even understandable as it used analog like Ape Escape. But it's the lack of selection or care from Capcom and Konami that gets me, Square-Enix too. If you consider as you did there the Japanese line-up vs the US one, it's just better in ways on variety and overall genre choice. It's kind of why I made that comment about the failing to do it comment throwing SNK under the bus as they did the crappier non-Japanese list with the games people go, especially if you're a fighter nut, or if not they put some really bad ones on the international list like that crap football game and the lousy golf title instead of Neo Turf Masters.

It's like these companies want to step up to bat and cash in like Nintendo did, but then they can't bother to bring their A game to justify the $100 price tag. It's like how did Nintendo get the same companies to bring up such great games for NES/SNES but then Sony who definitely since the PS1/PS2 era has more clout with the same developers gets kind of screwed?

With many thousands of PS1 games released, of course there's not going to be a way to pare it down to a list of just 20 that's truly satisfying. I think it's good enough for what it is and will sell the same general numbers regardless. The point of these things is to provide a broad representation of the top games on the system. This seems diverse enough in that regard. For the truly hardcore, I'm sure it's just a matter of time before this is hacked and you can put pretty much anything you want on there.

Seeing that the final list is out, I have a few thoughts:

-Cool Boarders 2... really? I remember it being just OK when it was new, and it has not aged well at all. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, or at the very least, Grind Session, should be on there instead of this.

-Destruction Derby 2 and Destruction Derby Raw were worlds better than the original, but it was a big hit at the time.

-Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo is a random choice, but a fun game.

-It's a crime that Twisted Metal is on here instead of Twisted Metal II.

-Rainbow Six is another head scratcher, especially with both Metal Gear Solid AND Syphon Filter on here. One of the Medal of Honor games would have been a better choice.

-Battle Arena Toshinden was a big deal at launch, so that's no surprise. Kinda wish another fighter made it on, maybe Rival Schools or one of the Street Fighter EX titles.

I'm hoping that this thing is hackable for all the people that are missing their favorite games.

Other than the hilarious method you did your spins by charging up, yeah, I recall 2 being nowhere near as good as 3 or 4. At least I have 3 on my vita I guess.

AKA they didnt want to spend the money

Well, yeah. They aren't a charity, and those who want to play those games have other ways to do so.

Spyro

Tomb Raider

Crash Bandicoot

Parasite Eve

Tomba

Twisted Metal 2

Street Fighter Alpha 3

Resident Evil 2

Silent Hill

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

A PS3, PSP, Vita, or PSTV with a bunch of the stuff you like would be a better system IMHO.

PSTV is $30 at Gamestop

PS3 is about $100 (this is the sweet spot, but you can get more or less)

Vita is $150

In this case, I agree. While there's obviously no amount of money that would make Nintendo license their IP to another videogame maker these days, I would be reluctant to overspend on licensing some of that other stuff (Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot, etc.) anyway, simply because again, there's just so much to choose from and it will sell about the same anyway, so no reason to cut into the profit margins too much. There simply wouldn't be much additional benefit.

It's a good product overall, but obviously has some shortcomings. Still, this should sell reasonably well, but I really don't have any interest in this product any longer as my backwards compatible PS3 gives me a ton of range on any Playstation 1, 2, and 3 game I could every hope and/or wish to play.

Here's the thing again, (in my view), folks are getting excited about needing to hack another of these mini retro consoles because they don't like the game selection, or it's not enough for them. Last I heard, these are all just some variant of a raspberry pi or cheaper running emulators with licensed games. Can you not do better with any number of other devices already? I just never understand the mindset that hacking these "official" retro devices is somehow superior to rolling your own. Ah well...mini rant over.

Agree but overspend? Sony has the money. Maybe it's not worth it to them or other parties are unwilling, it's obviously a mess, or they are simply idiots to their own history. I bet on the latter. lol

I agree with all of this and would love any of these games on there, and obviously they can only do so much. But I would add some of my personal favorites that were missed: Medal of Honor and MoH: Underground, Einhander, Warhawk (partly for a laugh a la Battle Arena Toshinden), Silent Hill seems a glaring omission as does Castlevania: Symphony, Powerslave, Disruptor, Mortal Kombat Trilogy.

Mainly, it's a surprise to me that (and I know others have said this and agree) they didn't have anything from several of their biggest franchises (even ones I personally am not into): Crash, Spyro, Parappa, Tomb Raider, Wipeout. Just weird for those huge (or huge to me :) ) groups got blanked on this, while they're including Intelligent Qube, and some others that they clearly picked the wrong one of a series (Twisted Metal instead of 2, etc). Just simply, they needed 30 or 35 games. :)

Cool Boarders 4 was great at the time; I skipped 3, but enjoyed 4 at the time. SSX came out (along with the PS2) shortly after and completely raised the bar to another level, though.

Agreed. There's a bunch of stuff I had always considered iconic on the PlayStation that didn't make this list, and it comes down EVEN MORE more licensing. Gran Turismo or Need for Speed? Automobile licensing. Tony Hawk? Beyond just getting Activision onboard there's also music licensing and the likenesses of the skaters. In fact, most of the Activision games I wanted would require additional licensing: Spider-Man, THPS 1 and 2, Quake 2, and Mechwarrior 2. None of that is IP that Activision really owns.

Incidentally, music licensing seems to affect lots of games, like Alan Wake (which just came back to Steam).
