Ok..I won't go overboard..is that demultplexer still available somewhere? Wow, it looks like a big change from what it was. Hmm. Maybe I should stick to 384k.. Haven't decided yet..I think if I could clone the board I have easily, then I could experiment..but I have no way of etching a copy.

The 74LS154 demux, or something else? Ksarul has 154s, but you'll need a simple adapter made from a proto board to use them. The other boards are available on demand from OSHPark; they are SMD so they're not for you if you're not up to M3M soldering.

 

The move to one gig is an easy one, and all you have to do is route wires that were originally going to the 154 to the daughterboard. Which needs reworked again, by the way, as there's an extra DIP socket with a couple of jumpers that somebody is going to ask me about soon :)

So I'm trying to understand a little here, is the 1 Meg upgrade the same as calling the board a Rambo board, and using the same os? Or would that be a completely different board altogether? I'd love to do the 1 mb option with this board, if it can handle the logic. I'm not sure which ram to keep or does all of it need replacing?

Oh, btw my name is Mike, and I don't mind adding additional boards, and regular soldering, but I can't do any board creations with surface mount since I don't have the tools, so this is something that I have to put together with what I already have, soldering station, ohm meter, logic probe hahaha ya know, old school!! So I'm really really hoping to get this board up with that, i don't mind getting parts if there available. I just would love to get this board running. The traces look wonderful after removing some of the sockets, I still need to clean more and desolder, but shoot I can even read the print! So if you're up to guiding me to the 1 mb upgrade, it would be fantastic! Damn I wish I could clone more boards to upgrade from this condition!! But I'll be happy to get this up and running. I've been working with Gary Opa on the os side of this prior to this in trouble shooting and he has some OS additions he said when he gets back from a trip he is on. I personally code in turboforth, as the reason for this card to work, and currently am using up a lot of the 1mb SAMS card in a project, but basically it's just learning how to use that space programmatically since TF really handles that space well! But the HRD+ needs to work of course.

So, to use my one gig scheme, you'd pull all of the memory chips except for the ROS 6264, as well as the '154, and run what used to a) be the chip-enable for the '154s (plural) from the 259 stack to the daughterboard, and the synthesized address lines from the same stack to the same board. We're basically taking advantage of the board originally being designed to handle memory in 512k chunks; plug in 512k/8 SRAM and the 154 nonsense goes away.

 

All that is for later, though. Let's get your board matching the HRD+ spec and working before we Frankenstein it. I'd really recommend picking up a cheapo TL866CS (and crossflashing it to the -A variant if you're up to it) to see what all you have to replace.

I figured you were sleeping when you mentioned a TL866...lol...I Know nothing!!! (Schultz)... about it..so, you're suggesting we need to check the condition of these..or as in ?? What

 

*laugh* It's only 2130 here. Not time to sleep yet.

 

A TL866 is a Chinese EPROM programmer that also can perform dead-chip tests on most 74xx logic (most notably omitting the 74xx245). If you're getting into the TI, I strongly recommend getting one. They're less than fifty bucks on eBay.

 

Get one of those, plug it into a Windows machine, install the Chinglish software, and do a logic test on all of your chip pulls (including memory). Replace the bad stuff with either HCT or ACT chips (power saving, rail-to-rail, yadaa yadaa yadaa). Enjoy the goodness thereby.

One note on the TL866, they recently dropped the TL866CS and TL866A from production and replaced them with the TL866-II. The major difference is that the new version adds support for newer, low-voltage chips, at the cost of eliminating support for any of the older, 21V chips.

 

Also, a significant portion of the TL866CS EPROMmers currently sold are fakes, from at least two opportunistic Chinese manufacturers who jumped into the breach when the original manufacturer stopped making them. . .

Just remember one thing, if you abbreviate a term, chances are I don't know what the crap it is..<<<lol>>> like the type of chips... except for a couple...or boards and test equipment...you know that you're dealing with, I wouldn't say idiot, ok I will..an idiot when it comes to the technical side..gimme a hammer and they'll come, just FYI..

Hey, don't sweat it. I was a machinist's mate, for crying out loud -- needs of the Navy, etc, and I picked up EE because I thought that knowing the teardown procedure for a Rix lube oil pump was fantastically boring. Gotta start somewhere. Thanks for picking the HRD+ -- it's a good example of 99% good engineering with 1% compromise.

Oh, copy...ok..I was guessing.well thank you for staying awake for the moment..I'll work on cleaning the board, getting a tl866, what chips do I need otherwise? Might as well get that while we wait..

 

Get CMOS Alliance 62256 from Mouser. The battery-backup circuit will be happier thereby.

The info on how to spot a counterfeit TL866CS/A is on their website - with pictures. I recently got a second genuine TL866 - I'll have to check the vendor and price. I found the vendor See-IC and the price was $29.95. Judging from the pictures posted my several vendors, there appear to be some genuine TL866s still available for the $45 range.

Yeh, and their update for the TL866A will tell you as you are updating it, if it was a reflashed tl866CS, that it was a TL866CS that has been flashed to a TL866A, and want to point you to their website about fakes. At least on mine.
