Moon Patrol hack !

Success :-D !!!

After almost a month trying to work around the limitations of the original game.. I consider this hack done, (as for what I set out to do) a modest graphic replacement hack..

I never expected to be hooked for so long, drawing and in the same time learning how to use hack-o-matic to see my drawings on screen !! I had so much fun !!

The flying aliens were more straightforward.

But the drawing of the buggy itself evolved in a new hobby of mine,

Sooo I present !! Moon Patrol Arcade !! starring what I consider to be the closest (to the arcade) buggy that can be drawn in game :P !!

But let's not forget the critical turning points of the buggy design,

from the hundreds of buggies I drew, a few stood out and I still love them (I have separate versions of each with different colors of course)

I hope somebody else pick this up and finish the original arcade coloring (doctorclu?), I have left in the original colors, I find them more easy on the eyes.

I will continue with a hack of the hack to turn it into a star wars game.. will see !

Enjoy and share.

Awesome work, thanks so much, totally love it !!!

Id love the arcade colored scenery and it also deserves one of those cool multi color intro screens like we see with so many other arcade versions....

May I suggest the arcade marquee as a source:

Could be good with some pre-processing done to the initial image.

EDIT - OK, you made me do it. Edits made, image processing. Probably won't post anything until the morning.

yessssssss !!!!!!

One question....I know nothing about rastaconverter except its brilliant output but....does the vibrant red of the Moon Patrol lettering turn out so flat in the end result ? If its a sacrifice to be made I understand of course.

The "cutie" is great. And to me it's the 1st version that looks better than the original.Thanks. Really nice work.

Would it be possible to make the choice of buggy style selectable somehow ? Now that would be awesome :) maybe with some pre-menu ?

Hey Stephen, can you send me rastaconverter.exe? I can't find it anywhere, and I would like to join the fun too.

Sometimes a change of palette or some color adjustment can get better reds, but really what it comes down to is poor color saturation on most Atari computers, and Rastaconverter palettes are emulating that poor color. If you have an Atari with upgraded video, the end result on a real machine will have better colors and reds, some upgrades are better than others with color saturation of course.

1200XL users who choose SuperVideo 2.1 1200XL version get a fixed chroma boost circuit, only found in a 1200XL which gives fantastic reds and deep, vivid colors all around. Atari had the right idea, but they botched the circuit, which I believe to be the real reason separate chroma was never attached for chroma/luma (S-video) on the 1200XL (which of course is part of the SV 2.1 upgrade). They were embarrassed and hid it purposely. But SV 2.1 1200XL version corrects and connects this chroma boost circuit (you do have the option of bypassing it or installing a switch to make the colors look just as dull as all the other Atari's without chroma boost). My Rastaconverter images as I see them on my 1200XL have excellent reds like in the source picture of the Moon Patrol teaser.

It's the best color this side of VBXE RGB, Sophia or maybe that other one...Ultimate Video? But other upgrades like Clearpic 2002 or others will improve the color, and reds, on any Atari.

Anyway, no matter your Atari model, if you get one of these upgrades like Sophia (Sophie?), Ultimate or RGB output with VBXE, the final product you see on your screen will have more vibrant reds.

the other thing is rasta in pal vs rasta in ntsc... the reddish color of pal never looks like the color of RED in NTSC... the number associated with with the proper color choice is different between the two... You really need two sets of color numbers to choose the proper match one for pal one for ntsc...

There are several examples of this in the Rastaconverter image thread I did myself, like the corvette that someone (maybe even you?) was saying looked gold on their system, the original was the standard corvette red. But on my PAL converted SV 2.1 upgraded video output, which I also posted a picture of, it came out a lot more red, not PAL's true red, but a huge improvement just from the upgrade. On the other hand I also did a picture of a Hot Rod I named 'cherry hotrod' or something like that, where the original source image the car was more of a burgundy color, but the PAL palette on Rastaconverter used PAL's true red on the Atari palette and on my 1200XL it looks cherry red. I also posted a picture of it from my monitor.
