Why do people actively hate "pre-NES" consoles?

When Jeremy Parish is good, he's very good. When he's not, however, he's terrible. The latest Retronauts is about the 30year anniversary of the Sega Genesis and since the hosts were "Nintendo kids," they know very little about the system. They go on with 90 minutes of ad-sponsored yammering nonetheless. Ergh.

Pretty much sums up every Retronauts to me. Something they're truly interested in? Metroidvanias? Japanese (Nintendo) development history? JRPGS? Game soundtracks and composers? They'll go all out and research to the nines, with multiple guests. When Retronauts is good, it's great.

But something the fans suggest (or sponsor)? They often bring somebody else on, all while taking time to remind you over and over how little they know about the subject because, you know, we didn't play wrestling games, or whatever. I guess they should be given credit (literally, they were, by patrons) for doing a show on something outside their interest and admitting it as such. But somehow their admitted ignorance comes off smarmy, like a rich guy not knowing how to change a spare tire and not being embarrassed by that. "Oh YOU know how to change a spare? I suppose you'd have to..."

Part of it is likely Jeremy's kinda effete manner ... when he's not talking over people and mansplaining. A friend calls him "Professor Parish" because of how he regurgitates Wikipedia talking points. He's set himself up to be an expert and the smartest person in the room, which is off-putting. Plus they stick unrelated advertisements in the beginning, middle, and end of the "show."

This was supposed to make up for their Megadrive episode 10 years ago, in which they (their words, more or less) "failed to vet one of the guests who went on and on to say how much Sega sucked" and they promised not to do that again. But they didn't have much to say, either. They did an Intellivision episode a while back which was irredeemably bad. They shouldn't have bothered.

It's still kinda fun ... on fast forward ... sometimes. It's still better than most game-related podcasts.

I do like his NES Works for that piece of history, but for everything else I end up watching UK retrogaming videos (not Top Hat Twit) even for Sega stuff because it seems anyone under 40 in the States is incapable of playing or acknowledging anything not made by the Almighty Nintendo...

I tried listening to a few retronauts episodes years ago, about some non-Nintendo libraries. I remember the SMS one was mostly talking about not remembering any games for it.

I'm 38, American as apple pie, and grew up as much with Sega as Nintendo...

For the people born between your age and my age (40) (and perhaps a year or two older and younger), the Genesis was really targeted at us. You were 9 when it came out in America, I was 11. We were both into junior high when it was outselling clobbering both the aging NES and the nascent SNES in sales. The games were less "cartoony" and seemed more "grown up" to me at that age. But you get much older than us, and it was NES all the way. Much younger and it was SNES and PlayStation.

When I was 12 I got an NES (the Genesis was already out but it was much more expensive) as a birthday gift, but when I got my Genesis (again, as a budget choice compared to the SNES), the Nintendo basically went un-played.

You don't know the half of it. Where I grew up, middle school started at 5th grade, so I was *10* when I started middle school. ;)

Mature or cartoony, I didn't care, I was just a vidiot. Any console would do...any game would do.

I love those consoles. Well maybe not the Studio II. Ha ha. So easy to play. What I don't like are the many failed 32 bit machines which were made like crap, had miniscule libraries, and now have fans who all need a shrink.

The 3DO and Jaguar can hear you and now themselves need the shrink. #napoleonComplex

This, exactly. I lost all patience for Jeremy Parish and Bob Mackie some time ago. They can wax poetic on every obscure original Gameboy title that only saw a release in Korea. But anything that falls outside of their Nintendo wheelhouse? Might as well not exist.

I resubbed this summer, and the first episode I listened to was on Indiana Jones. I spent at least 20 minutes waiting for them to actually start talking about, y'know, the games. Instead it was non-stop complaints about how a movie from 1980 set in the 1930s didn't share their modern, politically correct sensibilities. Oy.

I think the Super podcast Bros might be the reverse of this. They are younger guys, and they actively love the 2600 and the Vectrex. I know they weren’t old enough to play them when they were released and popular, but the way they talk about and research the older consoles you would think they received them for Christmas in the early eighties.

Ugh really, bitching about IJ because it was shot in the 80s about a time in the 30s and it wasn't politically correct for their fragile sense of right? Well that'll keep me clear of their crap outside of sticking straight to old obscure(and not) Nintendo history. They're well made, but I'll be ignoring them otherwise. Not everything has to be some morality or social correctness crusade as it's getting really tiresome.

Retron 5 is lag city. I'd rather get a proper clone like the AVS, Super NT and Mega SG.

Still, I don't see lag.... as you say "lag city"

I even posted this for you to prove what I see, just testing with Super Mario bros jumping with an original NES controller on my Retron 5.

I've been playing Mike Tyson's punch out, pretty far into it, no problems. I know some parts I just stink at over the years but, it works fine. Also been playing kid Icarus...what a great platformer for it's day.

How far into it? Mr. Sandman is where the game basically becomes unplayable when there is lag. It becomes almost impossible to dodge his triple uppercut because you have so few frames to react when his sprite blinks. And Mike Tyson... forget it.

On the other hand, Super Punch-Out on the SNES isn't nearly as affected by lag. I can can beat that game and get fast times in the time trial mode even when playing it on PC on an emulator.

I think I got up to the tiger on my sit down last week, I didn't play much more after the test. I ran into a problem with his Spin attack but, it seemed that MY TIMING was off. Recording that video was so I could review from that angle to see if I noticed ANY slowdown/lag.

I have a almost Minty NES, I just need to find the codes for each fighter (i'm sure I can google them).. I will try fight by fight to see what one I do better with. This will put this to bed....

There is a lot of factors why LAG happens, I have been reading about it for months now, why on a modern TV and gaming it happens. A good part of TV lag is due to HDCP, where the TV decrypts video, even when there is no HDCP on the content(all game systems accept streaming PPV movies on consoles). The panel has a lot to do with it but, not as much as the security of video does.

The port I ONLY play games on my TV, has NO DHCP... lag is very little on this port. It's the primary reason why I only use this port on the TV.

I kind of miss the CRT days because of this but, there is no way I could go back to that 65" TV that was 2 1/2 feet deep (rear projection)!

If there is any lag then I'd say that Bald Bull or Soda Popinski is where you'll really start to feel it. Soda's punches are especially fast. If there's lag then you'll be constantly dodging or prematurely dodging because you won't be able to react fast enough.

You need to use a slow mo camera. Anyways, by using youtubes speed feature I can see a good bit deal of lag.

The R5 doesn't really lag itself, though he delay on their awful controller will. It's the TV itself and how much milliseconds in display lag it has from its internal processing if that old school feed the NES gives. I had the R5 and I could play stuff that's picky for timing without issues, if I used a real controller, but throw their atrocity into the mix and it's pointless.

Forget all the other fighters.. you just need to go to Tyson and dodge for the first 1:30 by sight alone :P

Code; 007 373 5963

For us normal players it can be hard enough even with a regular NES on a CRT. But eventually I can do it pretty well (although, I could beat Tyson no problem back in the day). However when I try on my Rpi3, there's no way I can dodge without trying to anticipate. At most I'll dodge 1-2 punches, but I can't make it through the 1:30.

It's pretty frustrating finding pretty much any in-depth coverage of non-Nintendo stuff on YouTube. You're lucky if a video game channel every once in a while throws in some Megadrive/Genesis stuff.

Atari basically doesn't exist on (English-speaking) YouTube, with the exception of Jag Bar/Lynx Lounge/7800 Avenue and nosweargamer. Implantgames had a very nice overview of the Jaguar library recently; it was refreshing to watch some coverage of the Jaguar that isn't just "LOL the controller suxxxxxxxxxxx" and "the chick in Cybermorph is soooo annoying LOLZ."

Luckily no one plays games in slow motion. From that video, if there's lag it's almost imperceptible and personally doesn't affect me. I suck at SMB and can play it just fine on a Retron 5.

The complaint is that when you're at that level of precision, every millisecond counts and can mean the difference between a speed run record or eternal shame. Since I have the reflexes and cognitive powers of a drunken sloth, it's never been an issue for me, but I'm sure it's real to the caffeinated spider monkeys who complain about this all. the. time.

It's a really efficient way to signal ones technical acumen, video gaming skill, and lack of social desirability, with just a single statement.
