Mega Sg Confirmed!

The Collectorvision Phoenix is already going for the FPGA ColecoVision, so there's existing competition. Analogue would have to build cores for those systems and release them. I can't imagine they're interested in getting into a market when someone else is there. My guess is that's why they haven't re-released the Nt Mini in a plastic shell when the RetroUSB AVS already exists.

I thought he had built the cores for nearly every classic system. To be using a CV and Atari adapter would harken back to the days of the Atari Expansion module for the Colecovision.

I hadn't been paying attention, but the Phoenix's pre-order page says yes, an Atari 2600 core is built in.

Since March is a triple-paycheck month for me...I bit the bullet and pre-ordered the Mega Sg, and ordered my first Everdrive cart (went for the X3 for now, would love the X7 but it's nearly $200....maybe another time).

Have the Retro-Bit Genesis controllers on order from Castlemania, can't wait for those to arrive. Metal Jesus' review and others of those were stellar, and everything about them looks great right to the packaging. Especially for $15! Thought I'd go for what instead of the wireless 8bitDo, as there are reported connectivity issues...but they do look sweet.

Going to be great to have a good reason to re-crack out the Genesis collection...get some Dragon's Fury, Streets of Rage 2, Moonwalker, Rock 'n Roll Racing, Sunset Riders, and Adventures of Batman and Robin on. :)

I suspect I'll be much happier with this than the Genesis FB.

I got shipment confirmation today, too. Should be here Tuesday.

Incidentally, if you want the very best in image quality on a modern flat-panel display, you can have someone put an RGB bypass in a console or you can buy an FPGA system, and the FPGA system is cheaper. I sold my triple bypassed Genesis, RGB modded SNES Jr, and associated YPbPr cables on eBay and came out like $160 ahead after pre-ordering a Mega Sg and buying a Super Nt. Both of those consoles actually sold for more than I had spent to buy them and have them modded. And so far the Super Nt has been well worth it. I expect the same out of the Genesis. Must be the same people buying PVMs.

So anybody who's gotten a tracking number in an email, has yours actually shipped? My label was created Friday morning but it's not in FedEx's system yet. Maybe that's normal? I can't tell.

Pretty normal. Mine went Fedex Ground which sometimes takes some weird paths. I should have mine by end of Wednesday, even though it's less than 50 miles away from me now (Monday).

Yeah I figured. My Super Nt shipped the same day but it was already in stock. This was a preorder.

The My Life in Gaming and Modern Vintage Gamer videos (along with my Super Nt and AVS experience) gave me a huge boner. Very excited for this thing to arrive.

Mine just arrived around 90 minutes ago. I took some photos unboxing it because I'm stupid and then updated the firmware before I did anything else. It came out of the box with 3.8 but if you look at Analogue's site you'll see there are a TON of fixes since then.

There's a hint of coil whine in mine when you turn it on until it starts to warm up, which is really disappointing. :( We'll see if I have to live with it or what, but I'm at least contacting Analogue's support department.

That complaint aside, it seems like a phenomenal device. Default audio sounds amazing and the default video settings look great. I opted for 5x scaling because I'm used to losing a tiny bit of the screen from my time with the OSSC, and then turned on hybrid scanlines like I have on my Super Nt. Looks great. We live in the future, folks.

edit: just as I wrote that I dove into Streets of Rage 2 and noticed a weird sound from the initial horn hit/fall on the character select screen. It's why I use this game as a test, I guess.

edit2: the Master System channels are too loud. Turning them down based on FirebrandX's suggestion of 28 (instead of the default 55) fixed everything.

  • 2 weeks later...

I jail broke mine. No need for my Everdrive anymore.

As a diehard Genesis fan and someone who's seeked out all the various iterations of the console board changes I'm very impressed with the Mega SG.

I'm thinking about selling my back up Genesis.

I'm thinking the same, once the Sega CD issues get sorted. Mine is also jailbroken, but I'm playing Shining Force CD on my real hardware since it glitches on the Mega Sg. It doesn't crash or break the game, but it's annoying to look at.

Just loving the Mega SG to pieces. Even games I distinctly recall looking like a Bridge Troll's buttcrack back in the day (even for the time) look just great on the MSG (like specifically Mortal Kombat 1, the colors and special effects REALLY pop).

I had purchased the Everdrive, and have now Jailbroken my system, but that's ok as I'm going to use the Everdrive on my real hardware with 32X.

Never played Colecovision before, really enjoying it. Some very interesting games on there, very much enjoy this version of Root Beer Tapper and Space Fury.

I had seen a lot of complaints early about the 8bitDo M30 2.4ghz, but I just -love- it. Adoring it more with every play session. Fits my hands and is weighted nearly perfectly, never drops signal, just superb.

Kicking around some GG stuff, amused on occasion but nothing really great. Entertained for a few minutes with Panzer Dragoon Mini, very silly little game.

Any GG recommendations? Seems like most of the highest rated stuff are ported-down versions of Genesis games (SOR & SORII, Gunstar Heroes, etc).

Curious Sofa: be sure to find and install the "no-delay" BIOS for Colecovision. It removes the tiresome 10-second title screens from games by Coleco. Then play Donkey Kong, Pepper II, Frenzy, Looping, and Mr. Do. The Colecovision was my gateway to a bunch of b-side arcade games I never saw in person, quite fun.

For some reason, Star Control isn't in the smoke monster rom packs. I've got to grab that, stick it in a Faves folder on my Sd card, and play this machine some more.

Did grab the No Delay (actually chose to go with a Short-delay button press version from someone on here) Bios after watching / listening to the long YT videos from SmokeMonster. Agreed, the other delay does get incredibly tiresome! Will definitely try the ones you mentioned - gave Frenzy a bit of a run through and definitely enjoyed. Nothing like actually being able to make Evil Otto frown ;)

If anyone knows a location for the Rom of the Gamester81 game (saw it on a Colecovision Top Ten list of his on his YT), it looks really cool, would love to try that out.

Going to have to watch the Phoenix project with more intrigue now... :)

For GG stuff, there's a nice port of Pengo, the two GG Shinobis, and two GG Alestes. The latter four games are GG exculsives rather than ports. GG Shinobis feel like a combination of Mega Man and Revenge of Shinobi (aka Super Shinobi) with a stage select and multiple ninjas to play as with different abilities.

I have the Pac-Man collection on cart. Very impressive ports, especially on a stock CV.

I just want to chime in with my 2 cents on this console. It's an absolutely incredible product. Analogue has made me a believer, so much so that I'm probably also going to pick up their Super NT. This machine is off the charts. Solid build and so many customization options that it's almost overwhelming.

Speaking of which, it would be nice to see the community members share some of their recommended option settings for ideal image and sound. The standard out of the box settings are great, but I imagine that some of you AV pros might have some tweaks. Digital Foundry posted an excellent review with some suggestions and it has also been very helpful.

Another thing I want to rave about is that amazing M30 controller from 8Bitdo. I was on the fence after hearing about connectivity issues in various Amazon reviews. I am happy to say that I haven't experienced a single issue. The controller is one of the most solid, well built and responsive wireless controllers I have ever owned. I have really put it through a serious test too playing some of the most demanding fight games and shooters. It performs flawlessly every time.

For those of you who prefer wired controllers I must recommend the new Sega licensed 6 button pad from Retro Bit. It is far better quality than the controller available from Hyperkin. It's a well built pad with a lengthy 10 foot cord.

I also picked up a Mega EverDrive x5. What a fantastic device. My only disappointment is that I can't seem to play Game Gear games on the Mega Sg. Other than that small complaint it is a very worthy investment.

I have not stopped playing my Mega Sg since it arrived. Definitely worth every penny.
