TOS version ID?

Recommended Posts

Well, you could look at the Desktop Info screen and check the copyright dates. Knowing what machine you have and what country you're in would help narrow it down quite a bit as well.

In all honesty though, the best way would be to use the excellent SysInfo program on your ST. You can get it here:

https://sites.google.com/site/stessential/system-tools/sysinfo

Write it to a disk and run it on your ST. It'll tell you which ROM set your ST has and what country it's from.

TOS 1.0-1.04 were ST, STF, STM, STFM & Mega machines. Anything 1.06 and up are going to be some variant of STe or Mega STe.

Here's some copyright screen info:

Several SW can read out and show TOS version running. That's actually trivial thing, since TOS version 'mark' has well defined location and format in TOS ROM (RAM too) .

Easiest way would be to run some simple program for it. Usually people recommend SYSINFO, and that's easy to use, although some 100x shorter PRG could do this task :)

Indicating patches is different story. There is no standard for some header what will tell about patches. And no SW what will recognize them, of course.

If TOS gives some info about being different, that can help, and you can look for more details online. Like for KAOS TOS.

In my TOS improvings - http://atari.8bitchip.info/tosimpr.html

there is additional header with info about 'patches', improvements. Of course no SW what will indicate it - will be only when I make it :)
