1982 Prediction of Atari in the Year 2019

Not with the way they manage it these days, but if that changed.. sure why not..

I've never been to California but isn't LA one of the cities that has big homeless issues? Do they have the people living in tents on the sidewalks in some areas of the city? Just a curious question not trying to stir up anything politically related.

Yep, as wrong about Atari's future in 2019 as Blade Runner was about what 2019 would be like...camera phone booths?!? What's a phone booth Harrison?- use your cell phone! Strike 1!

Flying police cars or ANY flying cars to speak of?!? Strike 2!

Artificial humanoids that look and act just like us?!? Strike 3!

I could keep going on if there were more strikes in the baseball metaphor I am using... :-o :_(

Still one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time though... 8)

I have relatives who had to move from there, they enact all kinds of crap that leads to this stuff... when they cry to me about what happened, I ask, did you support the people who made these changes that eventually led to this... silence... and now you are doing the same thing where you now live? silence. Please don't go on about what you keep doing to yourself and others. Change your ways and help yourself and others with better choices that won't lead to this. I care about you but I can't help you if you won't change enough to help yourself long-term. I am sorry you can't live there anymore, and that you can't stand how your old house is being destroyed by this kind of tenant or that. I don't want to hear about the latest political feel good free for all crap you always tell me about because you still can't see how it has cost you everything. Call me when you want to talk about how I am or how to help our entire family and friends. We are at our best when we help each other directly, we are at our worst when we make others do this in places of ourselves. I like how we help each other here in these forums. It is personal and we can better determine who and how to help. You just can't do as good a job when you don't have true ideas of who and what involved is going on. When you are too far away from the actual folks and situations and such involved, it is almost always wasted time, effort, and money. After seeing this over and over it becomes common sense.

I love this prediction from ANALOG magazine (1982) of what Atari will be like in the year 2019. Oh how wrong they were!

Not surprising. ANALOG couldn't even predict the past. They filled my 5200 article with typos and then refused to print the corrections.

Oh that statement is a multi edged sword for which I have to close an understanding on more than one level.

Not that it would reduce the multi-edges of the sword, but maybe Virus is a better choice than cancer.

The streets of San Francisco are now littered with human feces and needles. This is a direct result of the "mis-management" the state has been suffering under for years now. I wish the good people would wake up soon and fix the problem.

California leads the nation as the #1 state for people in poverty: https://govtslaves.com/2018-11-08-liberal-utopia-california-plunges-to-poorest-state-in-america.html

I used to live in Cali. It was beautiful then.

This needs to be fixed ASAP.

We do a lot of dumb things. i heard ~50k homeless in LA and that doesn't include areas close like San Diego. We used to have public restrooms but people were sleeping in them and prostitutes were using them for sex so they got shuttered. Private businesses like Burger King or laundromats et al are making their restrooms customers only and keep them locked. I've heard from homeless people it is hard to find a toilet after 9 PM so this is why we have a problem with human wastes in the streets. I'm not sure it can be fixed as we now have 50k homeless conditioned to the convenience of just dropping trou from 9 PM to 7 AM. :)

BTW: I live in the SF Bay Area not LA but the problems are the same.

But the dystopian Blade Runner future is here, just a few details are wrong. Technology continues to progress with climate change mixed with pollution. It just missed continual acid rain with drought. Spread between the proletariat and Tyrell, I mean instead of Sebastian living alone in a dilapidated high rise we have a dozen foreign H1Bs PhDs crammed into a two bedroom house while Zuckerberg buys three houses and knocks down two of them to expand his digs. BA schools closed due to air pollution from the Camp fire and people wearing surgical masks to keep from breathing in particulate matter.

Come on now, it's better to leave all the dead wood, shut off the water, and protect the smelt, who were doing just fine in the first place or they wouldn't have found them!

I mean really cut off the water and leave all the dead stuff making a tinder box... the person(s) who lit it were the source of some very local global warming... this is setting stuff up to happen then pointing to it a some kind of self fulfilling prophecy....

everything is following the same cycle as it always has as we travel around the disk of our galaxy, in fact, based on our best data we might end up being a little cool, they won't know (as best we can) untill we are furthest from the edge of the disk and we are furthest from our sun within our own solar system... then they may scream ice age again..

Prediction is never an easy thing - especially for 'normal' people as such. Some here may have heard of the Nostradamus predictions - one of which was about Hitler.

But I doubt if any have heard of Billy Meier's predictions - here are some examples

http://www.futureofmankind.co.uk/Billy_Meier/Prophecies_and_Predictions

Especially this one from 1951

http://www.futureofmankind.co.uk/Billy_Meier/Open_Letter_to_all_Human_Beings_of_Earth_(5th_July,_1951)

He is a person who requires some time to study - he writes in German - and has written thousands of pages - only a portion has been translated into English.

He does warn that our current crisis is overpopulation - birth rates are rather shocking to think of - common sense will say it simply cannot continue at our current

rate.

On another slant is the view - that not all new technology has been made public. An example being that certain types of UFO craft may be secret projects - which may eventually be revealed in our near future? The Phoenix Lights being one example of this.

The future links to our past. Most will not be aware of this at all. That advanced technology was present in ancient times. In Egypt for example there are broken pieces of example artefacts strewn about - that show that only advanced machining was needed to produce these polished glass like surfaces - cut beautifully curved with straight sharp edges - a piece(s) can be seen just beside the great pyramid and elsewhere. They simply cannot be produced using copper chisels and hand tools. Egyptologists cannot explain them - and won't even try...

To be quite honest, if I was of a young adult age in 1981, I would have probably predicted that Atari would be big now.

When they were just so big and so cool at the time, how was it all thrown away so much?

No need to answer that.... but at the time it wouldn't have seemed possible that they would do that.

It is like imagining that Apple would spend $250B on film rights for the latest film and then ends up wasting it all. We wouldn't predict them to be that ridiculous.

The rise and fall of Atari is bot amazing and sad. A great story!

It's funny cause I heard a couple of months ago San Francisco and Seattle also passed laws banning the use of plastic straws. Seems insane when you consider what the sidewalks look like with poop and used needles. I guess after you go to the cannabis store and buy your legal marijuana you have to hit the alley outside to get your black market box of dixie straws. Don't worry though cause down here in the bible belt we have had some stupid laws that were finally changed. For the longest time, you couldn't purchase beer on Sundays in Montgomery Alabama. They also didn't serve draft beer at restaurants! Another stupid law was that the convenience stores weren't allowed to sell any beer larger than 16oz. I guess they figured that nobody was smart enough to buy two of them at once! :P

Apple will run it's course too..they all do. Look at IBM.

You can argue that Apple hasn't really created anything new or revolutionary in years. Someone will come in with a better, newer, product and then Apple will either need to buy them or die.

Microsoft has been stale for years in my opinion, and I have always stood by them.

Atari lasted a long time (though not long enough) by today's standards. Also considering that the first, the pioneers, typically get picked apart and trashed in the process of others stealing the ideas and making them better :)

But the gaming industry is now over $40 billion annually, and Atari can go to bed knowing they started and led that.

It's one of the most recognizable brands ever, even today.

How about NPR reporting? Do you consider it political? The investigation was done by NBC.

It's always interesting when someone tries to write about what things will be like decades later. Science fiction TV shows and big movies have been doing this almost since they started airing. What's really cool is how nobody really saw just how the internet would completely change our world. It's started slowly in the early '90s but it really wasn't until broadband became standard and we could link wirelessly that it really blew up. Throw in Social Media, smartphones, tablets, cheap laptops and the ability to connected at almost anytime, anywhere and our lives were changed forever. The last 20 years have truly been amazing when you really consider how small our planet has become because of technology.
